Humor Writer of the Month: Ward Sutton

Ward Sutton is a cartoonist, illustrator and writer. He was awarded the 2022 Berryman Award and the 2018 Herblock Prize for his editorial cartoons for The Boston Globe.

Sutton also creates cartoons for The New Yorker, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Politico, The Nation, The Minneapolis Star Tribune and The Village Voice.

He has a semi-secret second life as Stan Kelly, the fake cartoonist he created for The Onion in 2006. Kelly: The Cartoonist America Turns To was published in 2016. His first book, Sutton Impact: The Political Cartoons of Ward Sutton, released in 2005.

After beginning his career in the world of alt-weekly newspapers in the early 1990s, Sutton moved to New York City in 1995 and began creating cartoons for Entertainment Weekly, TV Guide, Rolling Stone, Time, MAD magazine and many more, earning acclaim from American Illustration, The Society of Illustrators, The Society of Publication Designers and The Society For News Design.

Sutton also has created animation for Comedy Central and HBO, and he has designed posters for the Sundance Film Festival, John Leguizamo’s Broadway show “Freak” and bands such as Phish and Pearl Jam.
