School of Engineering Welcomes Two New Members to Advisory Council

The School of Engineering has invited two new industry professionals to join the school’s advisory council. Dr. Lourdes Maurice and Matt Ulliman will serve the council until 2027 with the option to renew.

The advisory council assists the School in continuously improving the quality of its programs and the value it creates for all of its constituents by providing an external perspective on the school’s curriculum, programs and plans.

“We are fortunate to have a dedicated advisory council whose collective wisdom and experience greatly benefit our school,” said Dr. Gül Kremer, dean of the School of Engineering. “I am thrilled to see the council’s expansion with leaders from key engineering sectors that are vital to UD and our region. Their contributions will support our ambitious efforts to prepare outstanding engineers. I look forward to our community getting to know our newest advisory council members more closely.”

Dr. Lourdes Maurice is not new to the school’s advisory council and is joining again for a second term. She served previously in the early 2000’s.

She is the owner of DLM Global Strategies, LLC., a consulting company focused on aerospace, environmental issues and international relations. She is also passionate about bilingualism and has a boutique tutoring service.

Maurice holds a bachelor’s in chemical engineering and a master’s in aerospace engineering from the University of Dayton, and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Imperial College London. She also earned a master’s in national resource strategy from National Defense University.

From 1983 to 1999, Maurice served as Air Force deputy for Basic Research Sciences and Propulsion Science and Technology. She also worked at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Propulsion and Power Directorate.

In 2002, she joined the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as chief scientific and technical advisor for the environment and founded the Partnership for Air Transportation Noise and Emissions Reduction (PARTNER) Center of Excellence. She led FAA’s environmental and energy regulations, developing tools to assess aviation impacts.

From 2011 to 2017, Maurice was executive director of the Office of Environment, developing international standards and represented the U.S. in the International Civil Aviation Organization Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection. Dr. Maurice was a lead author for the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the National Academies of Science National Research Council. She was recognized as a contributor to the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the IPCC in 2007.

Maurice is a Fellow of the AIAA, an associate editor for the AIAA Journal of Propulsion and Power, and serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Aeroacoustics. Her expertise includes pollutant chemistry, combustion kinetics, hypersonic propulsion, and aviation fuels.

Maurice recently moved back to Dayton and is excited to engage with the UD community again.

“Since I was on the SoE Advisory Council previously, I have had a lot of experience with startups. I think this is a new environment graduates will experience and it will be good to influence their preparation,” Maurice said. “Also, I care deeply about sustainability and look forward to understanding how students are being prepared to address those challenges.”

Matt Ulliman is new to the advisory council.

“I am excited to be a part of the SoE Advisory Council,” Ulliman said. “UD does such a wonderful job shaping and supporting our next generation of bright, young engineers and I want to do my part to help the University continue to make this possible.”

Matt received his bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1985 and participated in a MBA program at the University of Dayton. He has spent more than 42 years working as an engineer and builder in the construction industry, 26 years at Ulliman Schutte Construction and 15 years working at Danis. Matt is CEO of Ulliman Schutte Construction and an experienced practitioner in design build, construction management and general contracting project delivery of large complex projects in the water infrastructure market.

In 1998, he founded Ulliman Schutte Construction with his business partner and UD engineering graduate, Herb Schutte. Today, Ulliman Schutte is a national leader in the construction and renovation of water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure, including treatment plants, pump stations, flood protection systems and pipelines.

Ulliman Schutte is a strong advocate and practitioner of experiential learning and they routinely recruit engineering students from UD and other leading universities to serve in its co-op and internship programs, providing them real-world experience as they finish their degrees. Matt will leverage his knowledge of working with UD students to enhance our SoE programs.

“My path in engineering has led me to the career-of-a-lifetime,” Ulliman said. “I’ve been able to help build critical infrastructure projects and a successful company that continues to grow. I want to share my experiences – and lessons learned – with the program and its students to help them achieve their dreams, and find their own career-of-a-lifetime. Whether that is through mentorship or connecting eager students with fellow industry members to explore career options – I am excited to add value wherever I can.”
