Together We Lead: Celebrating Growth and Friendship in Women’s Business Leadership
At the University of Dayton’s School of Business Administration, the Women’s Business Leadership (WBL) Integrated Learning-Living Community (ILLC) provides a vibrant and inclusive environment for first-year students to live, learn, and grow together. Currently led by Dr. Tahani Abdallah, MSA, PhD, the program’s mission is to advance women in business while fostering an atmosphere where all students, regardless of gender, feel welcome and supported.
Open to all business majors, the WBL ILLC combines residential living with the opportunity to take the BIZ 101 – Welcome to UD and Dayton Business course together as a cohesive group. The community connects students with academic resources, professional development opportunities, and meaningful social experiences. This fall semester, the WBL ILLC exemplified its mission by providing students with transformative events and unforgettable moments of connection.
A highlight of the semester was the self-actualization workshop hosted by community leaders from the Social Capital Project. Students explored key networking skills, from mastering a confident handshake to maintaining eye contact and practicing active listening. The workshop also included practical lessons on professional dining etiquette, teaching students how to gracefully balance a drink and plate while engaging in conversation. “I remember the business etiquette meeting very vividly,” said Jamie Zhang. “I think about it every time I'm in a professional setting. That meeting will definitely stick with me for a long time.”
Additionally, WBL members attended a networking event with the School of Business Administration’s prestigious Business Advisory Council (BAC). Students engaged with top industry professionals—including CEOs, brand managers, and HR executives—who shared invaluable insights on leadership, innovation, and resilience. The event offered students the chance to participate in meaningful discussions, leaving a lasting impact on their aspirations and professional outlook.
The Women’s Business Leadership ILLC fosters not only professional growth but also a strong sense of community and social responsibility. “My favorite part of being in the WBL ILLC this fall was the community that I was able to make with the other girls in my group as well as with my professor,” shared Bree Hoffman. Students often bonded while studying together and navigating the challenges of their first semester, creating friendships that many described as the highlight of their experience.
The semester ended with a heartwarming holiday celebration, during which students enjoyed a festive feast and created handmade holiday cards for children at the Ronald McDonald House of Medical Care. This meaningful activity emphasized the importance of giving back, embodying the program’s commitment to social responsibility and the Marianist values of community and service.
The students’ reflections on the semester revealed the profound impact of the WBL ILLC. Many expressed gratitude for the program’s supportive and enriching environment. “I loved living with fellow business majors. Being able to study together has really helped me with academics and socializing,” said Jamie Zhang. Bree Hoffman added, “It was such a unique experience, and I am happy to have been a part of it!”
Through workshops, networking events, and shared experiences, students not only gained practical business skills but also developed a sense of belonging and a deeper understanding of leadership.
The Women’s Business Leadership ILLC at the University of Dayton continues to inspire and prepare the next generation of business leaders. By creating a space where students can grow academically, professionally, and personally, the program exemplifies the power of community and the importance of advancing women in business. With a semester full of growth, friendship, and meaningful experiences, the WBL ILLC is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future in business leadership.
