In November 2023, we gathered for the 2023 Social Practice of Human Rights, co-convening with the International Conference on the Right to Development, focused on the theme – “Decolonization and Development for Africa and People of African Descent.” This SPHR23 blog series captures the discussions and shares the learning that occurred during the conference around the themes of (1) the right to development; (2) building social movements; (3) just energy transitions; and (4) identity and belonging — as applied to Africa and the people of African descent.

Josie Alvarez, mechanical engineering technology student and current president of the UD chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), recently represented SHPE at meetings with government representatives in Congress.

Just like Christ endured isolation and loneliness in his darkest hour, it is all too common for people who identify as neurodivergent to feel marginalized and unaccepted. We have been socially conditioned to believe that there is a “typical” way that people think, behave, and communicate, and when there is a deviation from this “norm” it is easy to dismiss, ignore, or even mistreat God’s creation.

Cameron Nowlin ’22 found his vocation because of the Flyer Promise Scholars program and gives back to UD because of what the University did for him.
