An Excellent Foundation

Philosophy — the pursuit of wisdom — deals systematically with values and concepts central to our lives as individuals and social beings. At the University of Dayton, we explore the rational bases of many areas of inquiry such as science, social science, politics and religion. And our curriculum's strong emphasis on ethics and social justice embodies the Marianist values of service, justice and peace.

Programs of Study

Every Student Is Unique. So Are We.

Core Program

All first-year philosophy majors are enrolled in our Core program. To deepen the learning experience, Core students live together while participating in an innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum.

Core students who major in philosophy are eligible to apply to a program that allows driven, high achieving students the capacity to matriculate directly into the University of Dayton School of Law after completing three years of undergraduate work at UD.

Flexible Degree

Students are encouraged to consider a second major, and over half of all philosophy majors have a second major.

Advisors help students plan for a second major if they wish. A second major expands students' opportunities for future careers or graduate study and also permits students to develop more of their intellectual interests.

Recent graduates have completed second majors in biology, communication, economics, English, history, international studies, languages, physics, political science, premedicine, psychology, religious studies and sociology.

The University of Dayton encourages students to understand the connected nature of knowledge by developing skills in making connections across academic disciplines.

Honors Program Student Research

Students in the Honors Program have the opportunity to write a thesis under the close supervision of a faculty member. Students are also encouraged to present research at national philosophy conferences for undergraduates.

Bachelor of Arts Program in Bangalore, India

The College of Arts and Sciences, in conjunction with the Marianists of Bangalore, India, offers the B.A. with a major in philosophy and a minor in religious studies. Students come from various parts of India and are selected after several years of study and service. The program began in April 1998.

The campus includes a classroom building with a growing library, much of which has been developed through donations from UD faculty. The campus also includes living space and a central chapel. It is a living community where students embrace the importance of learning while leading and serving.

Faculty from the Dayton campus join faculty in India to deliver the curriculum. UD graduates have frequently donated a semester, or even a year, serving as tutors for students in the program.

Philosophy Faculty

We have one of the largest and most intellectually diverse faculties in the Midwest and they have a wide range of research and teaching interests.

Experiential Learning

Philosophy majors have a wide variety of opportunities to gain experiential learning and learn outside the classroom at events like the Richard R. Baker Philosophy Colloquium.
