Where Your Ideas Take Shape

Step into spaces designed to push the boundaries of your creativity. Housed in Fitz Hall, the University of Dayton's state-of-the-art studios combine traditional craft with expansive technology. As a student, whether you're throwing clay in the ceramics studio, prototyping in the wood and metal shops, mixing pigments in the painting bays or mastering digital and darkroom photography, you have full access to professional-grade tools. Working alongside top-notch, practicing faculty, you won't just study art here — you'll build the hands-on technical mastery needed to bring your boldest ideas to life.

Printmaking

In this space, you'll learn a comprehensive overview of screenprint and relief printmaking techniques, as well as technical and conceptual development and a general history of each process.

Ceramics

The ceramics studio is where you'll learn basic methods of working clay using the wheel, coil and slab techniques. You'll also have the opportunity to create Raku pottery in our outdoor sculpture yard.

The art education studio provides space where you'll develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and pedagogical approaches to teach and inspire learners of all ages in visual arts.

Painting

In the painting studio, you'll learn the visual language of painting, as well as its history, fundamental principles, materials, tools and methods.

Drawing Studio

Our drawing studio is a high-energy space dedicated to mastering the two-dimensional form. Through consistent, immersive practice, you'll tackle the core challenges of figure drawing and complex compositions — learning how to select, arrange and manipulate visual elements to create unforgettable images. Experimenting with graphite, expressive charcoal and rich conté crayons, you'll transform basic observations into advanced technical skill.

Additional Studios

Anatomy Drawing

In the anatomy drawing studio, you'll learn observational drawing skills and apply these skills to drawing the human body and anatomy from nude models, the skeleton and muscle casts and renderings.

Color and Design/2D Design

In this space, you'll learn the principles of color perception, interaction, systems both digital and analogue, mixing, cultural and historical significance. You'll also gain an introduction to studio practice, creative strategies and two dimensional compositional principles.

Foundation 3D Design

Here, you'll gain an introduction to three-dimensional composition and explore the principles of design, material, meaning and cultural significance. You'll also learn to work with traditional and nontraditional materials.

Sculpture

In the sculpture studio, you'll learn about forms as a means of developing an understanding of mass, shape and control of medium and integrate various materials such as wood, plaster and clay with personal expression.

Painting a Memory

In the painting and woodworking studios, David Brathwaite transforms fleeting childhood memories of his father into visual narratives through fragmented portraits, layered photographs and collaged faces.
