Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to the University of Dayton’s Department of Communication. We’re glad to have you checking us out, and hope that this site provides all the information you need. You will find information about our degrees, areas of concentration, our faculty, and more.
Communication is a great field to be a part of. For students, a degree in communication can improve quality of life and open many doors. Survey after survey shows that what employers most seek in new hires are people who can present ideas clearly, work well in teams, constructively manage conflict, and exhibit good interpersonal skills. In short, they want people who communicate well. Whether you study communication management (organizational and interpersonal communication), electronic media (broadcast and production), journalism, public relations, or theatre, the Department of Communication will help you develop knowledge and skills in areas that enhance your quality of life and career potential. Combine our coursework with an internship for work experience, and you are well on your way to a promising start to your career.
I joined the University of Dayton in 2008 to serve as department chair. Why did I choose UD? My decision was not based on any single factor, but a combination of qualities that you will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. The university is large enough to have a wide range of educational opportunities, yet small enough that faculty and staff know students by name. UD offers its faculty the opportunity to balance commitment to scholarship with excellence in teaching--a situation that offers faculty great career opportunities, and gives students the chance to study from faculty dedicated to their education yet involved in shaping their field of study. The university’s Marianist traditions have given the campus a strong sense of community. And the city of Dayton is rich in culture and the arts, creating an environment that has much to offer, while maintaining an affordable cost of living. This combination offers an ideal educational environment for students and faculty alike. It is a privilege for me to serve such a high quality department.
I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our department. Please feel free to contact any of our faculty or staff if you have questions.
