Campus Ministry

Position Summary

Campus Ministry Graduate Assistants at the University of Dayton, a Catholic and Marianist Institution. Share your faith through relational ministry to college students while pursuing a Masters in Theology or Pastoral Ministry. Serve undergraduate students by journeying with them to cultivate faith, foster spiritual growth, and form Christian leaders through spiritual mentoring and discipleship, leading small groups, facilitating retreats, planning worship, coordinating service and justice initiatives, and more. Work alongside seasoned campus ministers and engage in holistic ministerial formation. Positions for the upcoming year will consist of unique portfolios that include a combination of the following: Residence Life Ministry, Retreats, Liturgy, Service and Justice, and Vocational Discernment ministries.

Breakdown of Time

  • 40% Engage in direct ministry with students. This may include (but is not limited to) the following: form Christian leaders through spiritual mentoring and discipleship, leading small groups, facilitating retreats, planning worship, coordinating service and justice initiatives, and more.
  • 40% Attend planning ministry opportunities, follow up from ministerial engagement, email, etc.
  • 10% Be an active member of the UD Campus Ministry Team through participation in team meetings, large liturgies, and other Campus Ministry events.
  • 10% Participate in GA formation and supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a full-time graduate student.
  • Ability to articulate one’s own lived spiritual life and desire for spiritual growth in relationship to God/Jesus
  • Experience as a leader or participation in ministry programs and activities
  • Sensitivity to diversity in ministry
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail in program planning and outreach
  • Ability to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Willingness to engage in a process of ministerial formation for lay ecclesial ministry, including appropriate representation of Catholic teachings in public and pastoral situations. This will be clarified and discussed in the orientation and formation process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with serving or supporting college students

Position Summary

The Global Learning Living Community Residence Coordinator (GLLC-RC) position is a unique role engaging U.S. and international residents in cultural exploration and dialogue in a living environment. Integral to the success of The Dayton Experience, this position prioritizes the KCE Approach to ensure community living is an essential learning experience. Staff are charged with intentionally building relationships to help residents know themselves and others, connect with resources, and empower a thriving community defined by solidarity and care.

This position includes dual responsibilities between the Global & Intercultural Affairs Center (GIA) and Housing and Residence Life (HRL). The GLLC provides a unique focus on cultural diversity with the goal to develop intercultural competency and sensitivity among its residents. This position leads in the planning and implementation of the annual kick-off events and programmatic efforts throughout the academic year, while also assisting in the support of academic inquiry, resident support,  and informal dialogue. 

This position serves as a resource for all residents of the GLLC, which includes assisting international students in navigating the university culture and structure, and facilitating communication between residents. The GLLC RC is co-supervised by an Area Coordinator (HRL) and the Coordinator of Intercultural Student Engagement  (GIA). This position meets regularly with supervisors, students and other staff. The RC is expected to follow all policies and provisions outlined in the university’s code of conduct. This position is a live-in assignment, renewable annually, with expectations of working 20 hours per week with a preferred start day in early July and an end date in May of the following academic year. The GLLC RC may not hold an outside position or employment during the academic year but may request academically-related positions, to include but not limited to internship and co-op, through their supervisor and GIA with final approval from the Assistant Dean of Students and Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life.

Breakdown of Time

  • 30% Supervision: Directly supervises up to 6 undergraduate staff members (Resident Assistants), including 1 GLLC Resident Assistant. Maintains a professional relationship with undergraduate staff through weekly meetings and establishes and maintains  relationships with GIA & HRL Staff.
  • 20% Community Development: Fosters an atmosphere that is conducive to cross-cultural dialogue, exploration, academic and personal growth and participates in and supports international campus events and programs throughout the year.  Assists in implementation and planning of the residential curriculum and community standards process. Attends community programs and standards meetings as necessary. Involves residents in planning programs that reflect their interests and that enhance the development of the community such as retreats, relationship development and programs. Supports the Global Competency Certificate mini-course.
  • 15% Administration: Assists in the management of the GLLC in conjunction with GIA and HRL. Performs and assists in the duties of the supervisor (AC) in their absence. Completes all paperwork and duties assigned by GIA and HRL. Assists in the planning of transportation for any off campus programs/events for the GLLC. Assists in the co-management of the 1850/Campus Groups for their community.
  • 15%: Crisis Response and Special Coverage: Assists with on-call duty response for the University as directed by the Assistant Dean of Students and Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life. Assists in providing additional on-call/duty coverage as assigned for University holidays and weekends including, but not limited to, opening weekend, Labor Day, Family Weekends, Fall Break, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Day, Spring Break, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and closing.
  • 10% Advising and Informal Counseling: Establishes and maintains a professional relationship with residents and student staff.  Advises students within the limits of their capabilities in academic, social, and personal matters. Assists in the support of students on topics (including, but not limited to): homesickness, international transition, college adjustment, roommate conflicts, substance use, and mental health. Assists in promoting the GLLC for interested students for the following academic year (tabling, info sessions, etc.). Demonstrates familiarity with University policies in order to direct students to appropriate resources while exercising sensitivity, patience, and care when addressing concerns around a student’s personal well being.
  • 5% Student Conduct: Confronts and documents students who violate University policies as indicated by the University’s student code of conduct. Facilitates behavioral hearings and necessary follow-up with students in order to educate and understand impact in the community. Facilitates educational sessions and/or responds to bias and intolerance as needed.
  • 5% Other Duties As Assigned: In addition to the primary functions of the RC role, outlined above, RCs are responsible for the following: Acting as a liaison between students and GIA/HRL while maintaining a regular communication plan with GLLC residents; Attending and participating in departmental and divisional staff training; Participating in departmental selection processes as assigned, including attendance at pertinent meetings related to placement processes between the GIA and HRL;  Assisting with departmental and area opening and closing processes and events; Serving on in-area, departmental, and University committees as assigned.

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail in project management and customer service skills.

  • Computer skills including experience in and access to visual communication software such as Google Docs, Slides, Sheets and/or Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Position Summary

The Graduate Assistant for Housing Operations (GAHO) position is a graduate assistantship at the University of Dayton in the Department of Housing and Residence Life. Integral to the success of The Dayton Experience, this position prioritizes the KCE Approach to ensure community living is an essential learning experience. Staff are charged with intentionally building relationships to help residents know themselves and others, connect with resources, and empower a thriving community defined by solidarity and care.

Breakdown of Time

The GAHO is expected to follow all policies and provisions outlined in the University’s Student Standards of Behavior. The GAHO position is a 10-month live-in assignment, renewable annually, with expectations of working 20 hours per week. The GAHO may not hold any additional outside position or employment during the academic year, but may request academically-related positions—to include but not limited to, internship or co-op—through the Assistant Director of Housing Operations, with final approval from the Director of Housing Assignments and Operations.

  • 30% Desk Operations: The GAHO plays a vital role in supporting the Desk Operations Manager and the Assistant Director for Housing Operations in the management of daily desk operations. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with the oversight of desk resources such as moving carts and vacuums, helping to update staff manuals, and ensuring the organization and efficiency of the desks.
  • 20% Data Analysis: The GAHO is responsible for assisting the Assistant Director of Housing Operations with data analysis and assessment. This includes, but is not limited to, aiding in the collection, preparation, and analysis of data related to operational processes such as move-in and move-out, lock changes, and fire evacuation drills.
  • 15% Selection & Hiring: The GAHO is responsible for assisting the Desk Operations Manager and Assistant Director for Housing Operations in coordinating annual selection processes for desk assistants and desk assistant supervisors. This includes, but is not limited to, reviewing applicants and facilitating interviews. 
  • 15% Training: The GAHO is responsible for assisting the Desk Operations Manager and the Assistant Director for Housing Operations in coordinating both annual and ongoing training processes for desk assistants and desk assistant supervisors. This includes, but is not limited to, preparing training materials and facilitating the delivery of training content.
  • 15% Crisis Response and Special Coverage: The GAHO is required to assist with on-call duty response for the Department of Housing and Residence Life. This includes serving on a rotation to provide intervention support to Desk Assistants and serving on a weekend rotation to provide intervention support within the residential community. Position Summary

This anticipated assistantship is for the Department of Physical Therapy and aims to support the research of 1-2 tenure-track faculty members.

Breakdown of Time

  • 90% research support: This position will assist in the various stages of research projects which can range from data collection, analysis, and presenting. This could include conducting literature reviews and gathering data or information. Assist in the design and implementation of research experiments. Collect, analyze, and interpret research data. Prepare research reports, presentations, and publications. Assist in the preparation of grant proposals and research manuscripts. Present research findings within the university, conferences, and seminars. Maintain and operate laboratory equipment. Conduct fieldwork or laboratory work as necessary (e.g., data collection, sample collection). Ensure the safety and proper maintenance of the research environment. Following laboratory and university procedures.
  • 10% administrative and other department support: Assist with supporting others within the lab or department. Participate in departmental seminars and research meetings. Assist with administrative tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrolled as a full-time Doctor of Physical Therapy student in good standing.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess technology experience in Google Docs, Slides, Sheets and/or Word, Excel, Powerpoint. 
  • Demonstrate attention to detail while managing multiple deadlines.

Position Summary

This anticipated assistantship is for teaching, research, and administrative assistance in the Department of Religious Studies and supports the work of faculty and staff.

When the graduate assistant provides teaching assistance, it is under the supervision of a faculty member. Key responsibilities involve supporting the instructional activities of one or more courses and may include: assisting in-class (including online) instruction; grading and evaluation; holding office hours; preparing course materials; and/or providing student support.

When a graduate assistant provides research assistance, it is related to the Assistantship holder's degree or program of study and led by a faculty member or other University researcher. Key responsibilities of a graduate Research Assistant may include: design and execution of research studies; literature reviews; data collection, analysis, and interpretation; writing research papers and reports; and/or contributing to grant proposals.

A graduate assistant may also provide support for the smooth and efficient operation of the Department of Religious Studies. Key responsibilities may include: managing communications; office organization; data entry and record-keeping; coordinating travel arrangements; planning and coordination of events; providing customer service; and/or performing other clerical or administrative support tasks.

Breakdown of Time

  • 10% Participate in GA formation and supervision
  • 5% Attending department events

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a full-time graduate student.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Technology experience in Google Docs, Slides, Sheets and/or Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strong attention to detail in project management and customer service skills.
  • Must be willing and able to work on-site at the University of Dayton Campus.
  • Ability to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to meet project and assignment deadlines.
  • Availability to attend and observe assigned undergraduate classes as well as aid faculty in grading, teaching, and exam proctoring.
  • Flexibility to learn technical tasks such as scanning, copying, pdf editing.
  • Ability to complete research projects, data collection & organization.
  • Willingness to complete driver's certification in order to be able to provide transportation for department guests, etc.
  • Ability to perform some physical tasks such as carrying/organizing books & other materials, distribution of materials around campus, etc.
  • Availability to work outside of the normal business hours of 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Position Summary

The Residence Coordinator (RC) position is a graduate assistantship at the University of Dayton in the Department of Housing and Residence Life. The RC is responsible for assisting a full-time Area Coordinator (AC) or Community Coordinator (CC) in the overall management of a residential community. Integral to the success of The Dayton Experience, this position prioritizes the KCE Approach to ensure community living is an essential learning experience. Staff are charged with intentionally building relationships to help residents know themselves and others, connect with resources, and empower a thriving community defined by solidarity and care.

There are 10 unique residential communities in the department. The RC is expected to follow all policies and provisions outlined in the University’s Student Standards of Behavior. The RC position is a 10 month live-in assignment, renewable annually, with expectations of working 20 hours per week. The RC may not hold any additional outside position or employment during the academic year, but may request academically-related positions, to include but not limited to, internship or co-op through their AC or CC with final approval from the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life.

Breakdown of Time

  • 30% Supervision: The RC directly supervises a sub-staff of up to 10 undergraduate staff members (Resident Assistants or Fellows). The RC will establish and maintain a professional relationship with undergraduate staff through weekly all-staff, sub-staff, and 1:1 meetings. RCs are also responsible for evaluating staff job performance utilizing the departmental evaluation process.
  • 20% Community Development: The RC is responsible for fostering an atmosphere that is conducive to academic and personal growth among the residential community. The RC will advise and involve staff in planning initiatives that enhance the development of the residential community and are in line with the residential curriculum. The RC will support the implementation of the department’s community standards process. The RC is expected to attend community programs and community standards meetings as necessary.
  • 15% Administration: The RC is responsible for assisting professional staff (AC/CC) in the overall management of the residential community. The RC must complete all administrative tasks and other duties that assist the professional staff in responding to student issues and concerns. 
  • 15% Crisis Response and Special Coverage: Each RC is required to assist with on-call duty response for the department of Housing and Residence Life. This includes serving on a rotation to provide intervention support to Desk Assistants and serving on a weekend rotation to provide intervention support within the residential community. RCs may also be expected to provide additional on-call/duty coverage as assigned for University holidays and weekends including, but not limited to, opening weekend, Labor Day, Family Weekend, Fall Break, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Day, Spring Break, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and closing weekend.
  • 10% Advising and Informal Counseling: The RC will be expected to establish and maintain a professional relationship with residents and each staff member in their residential area. RCs will advise students within the limits of their capabilities in academic, social, and personal matters. The RC should also be aware of student issues including, but not limited to, homesickness, college adjustment, roommate conflicts, substance use, and mental health. The RC must also be familiar with University policies in order to direct students to appropriate resources. The RC must exercise sensitivity, patience, and care when addressing concerns that could adversely affect a student’s personal well being.
  • 5% Student Conduct: The RC will uphold the Student Standards of Behavior and Community Standards by confronting and documenting students who violate University policies. The RC is also responsible for meeting with students, determining responsibility for policy violations, assigning appropriate outcomes, data entry into the University’s judicial database, and any additional student follow-up.  The RC will facilitate Opt-in sessions, in partnership with the Office of Community Standards and Civility, as an alternative to the Student Conduct System for first time incidents of a minor nature.
  • 5% Other Duties As Assigned: In addition to the primary functions of the RC role, outlined above, RCs are responsible for the following: Attending and participating in departmental and divisional staff training; Participating in departmental selection processes as assigned; Assisting with departmental and area opening and closing processes and events; Serving on in-area, departmental, and University committees as assigned

Position Summary

This anticipated assistantship for University of Dayton Magazine in the division of University Marketing and Communications will be a reporter and project manager for print and digital communications. These include University of Dayton Magazine and its digital and web counterparts, social media, e-newsletters and other projects. The graduate assistant will collaborate with the editors and mentor undergraduate staff to develop, complete and promote stories for a variety of audiences to enhance the reputation of the University of Dayton. The graduate assistant will gain writing and editing experience and have their bylines on projects that demonstrate the University of Dayton living out its mission. Adherence to deadlines is critical, as is communication with the editors regarding workload and any impediments to stories being able to be completed on deadline. Accepting Your Graduate Assistantship Offer

Once you receive an assistantship offer, there are some items that need to be taken care of in order to be successful as a graduate assistant.

Sign your Contract

Once you have been offered an assistantship, you will receive a contract from the department in which you will be working. Review the contract carefully and ask any questions related to your hours, time off, stipend, and tuition remission before signing. After your contract is processed, you may not be able to make changes. If you have questions contact your supervisor or UDGradSchool@udayton.edu.

Navigate Financial Aid

If you have worked through The Office of Financial Aid also known as Flyer Student Services for funding purposes, you will want to ensure they are aware that you have accepted an assistantship. Your funding award may be affected since you will be earning a stipend and have tuition remission.

Contact Human Resources

Before your first day of work, you are required to go to Human Resources and complete the paperwork necessary to be eligible to work at UD as a graduate assistant. Students who may have worked on campus as an undergraduate employee, or graduate students who worked on campus but were not on contract, are still required to visit Human Resources. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Please visit Porches to set up your email account and phone number with the most recent and preferred contact information. You will be able to forward your udayton.edu email account to another email account (if you prefer) and list your work location.
