Refunds for Drop or Partial or Complete Withdrawal

Tuition Refunds (Reduction in tuition assessment)

Students who need to drop any courses or withdraw from the University are encouraged to do so prior to the start of the term to ensure 100% reversal of the term's charges. Reducing credit hours to below full-time student status may reduce your financial aid eligibility.

Special refund rules apply for students who withdraw and have received Title IV federal financial aid.

Refund schedules apply to courses that meet the entire semester. School of Law, online programs and courses that meet for only part of a semester or in a part of term within a major term (fall, spring, summer) will have different refund deadlines.

The Intensive English Program follows the University of Dayton’s refund for student withdrawals policy and its policy on refunds for dropped courses and withdrawal. Specifically, the IEP follows the refund schedule for UD’s Summer I term. This is for all IEP terms.

Please view instructions on how to calculate refunds. Contact Flyer Student Services/Student Accounts for additional information.

How to Calculate

Student refunds for tuition are calculated based on the student's liable hours after the drop/withdrawal. Liable hours are calculated as the total hours for which a student remains registered PLUS the liable portion of the dropped/withdrawn course(s).

The liable portion is arrived at by taking the number of dropped hours times the liability rate (which is 100% minus the refund period percentage). The refund amount is the difference of the original assessment and the recalculated assessment based on the new liable hours.

Refunds are based on a percentage of the credit hours being dropped, not the dollar amount that has been paid.

Remember that dropping credit hours may result in a reduction of financial aid. Please check with a financial aid counselor for information on how your eligibility might be affected prior to drop/withdrawal.

Undergraduate Calculation Examples

The following examples are based on the refund schedule for a fall, spring or full summer term:

Example 1

Full-time undergraduate student taking 16 credit hours — complete withdrawal during the 75% refund period:

Calculation Example 1

Current Liable Credit Hours and Cost:

16 Liable Hours

$24,570

After Dropping 16 Credit Hours:

0 Liable Registered Hours

4 Liable Dropped hours
(16 dropped hours x 25%)

Total New Liable Hours = 4
($1,760 x 4)

$7,040

Refundable Tuition

$17,530

Example 2

A.) Full-time undergraduate drops from 18 hours to 15 during the 50% refund period:

Calculation Example 2

Current Liable Credit Hours and Cost:

18 Liable Hours

$24,570

After Drop of 3 Credit Hours:

15 Liable Registered Hours

1.5 Liable Dropped Hours
(3 dropped hours x 50%)

Total New Liable Hours = 16.5

$24,570*

*New Liable Hours remain in the 12 - 18 hour flat rate range, therefore tuition charge does not change.

B.) If the same student were to add 2 credit hours on a subsequent day, new liable hours would become 18.5. Hours above 18 are charged at the per hour rate of $1,760. As a result, the student would be billed for an additional $880, as shown below:

Calculation Example 2

Current Liable Credit Hours and Cost:

16.5 Liable Hours (15 registered + 1.5 liable dropped)

$24,570

After Adding 2 Credit Hours:

17 Liable Registered Hours

1.5 Liable Previously Dropped Hours

Total New Liable Hours = 18.5

$25,450*

*12-18 hour flat rate and .5 hours over 18:  .5 x $1,760 = $880    $24,570 + $880 = $25,450

Example 3

In the following example, an undergraduate student registered for 7 credit hours drops 4 credit hours during the 25% refund period.

Calculation Example 3

Current Liable Credit Hours and Cost:

7 Liable Hours @ $1,760

$12,320

After Dropping 4 Credit Hours:

3 Liable Registered Hours

3 Liable Dropped Hours (4 dropped hours x 75%)

Total New Liable Hours = 6 ($1,760 x 6)

$10,560

Refundable Tuition

$1,760
