UD Sinclair Academy marks 10th anniversary

The UD Sinclair Academy marks its 10th anniversary with a milestone that reaches beyond campus. More than 250 students have earned a UD degree through the program, with nearly 80% staying in the Dayton region after graduation.

“This is exactly what we hoped would happen when we built this partnership,” said UD President Eric F. Spina. “More students have access to a UD degree, and they bring talent, energy and perspective that make both campuses better and build the workforce for the Miami Valley jobs of today and tomorrow.”

The academy helps remove financial barriers by allowing students to start at Sinclair College and transition to UD, with access to university life and support from day one.

“I was concerned about finances, but realized I could get both experiences for a more affordable cost,” said Camryn Vaught, who graduates this month and plans to pursue a career in physical therapy.

Students have access to advisors on both campuses, a clear plan for what classes to take on both campuses and success professionals to help with any questions after they transition to UD. Academy students have joined clubs, lived on campus, researched with UD faculty and more while taking classes at Sinclair. The academy has grown as well with new programs to support students. The Kessler Scholars program for first-generation students includes full tuition scholarships to UD, peer mentoring, leadership development and financial support for housing and meals. And the Professional and Applied Learning Fellowship focuses on career readiness with workshops, mentoring and other benefits.

“There are so many opportunities for connection at both schools,” said Vaught, who worked as a peer tutor and orientation leader at UD, as well as a member of the UD Sinclair Leadership Council. “Enjoying both campuses is really a privilege that not a lot of people get to have.”

Students who transition to UD graduate at a 95% rate within four years. The 2023-24 graduates reported a 96% success rate.

“The financial benefits set me up for success. I was able to pay off my loans,” said Vince Weber, a 2024 graduate now completing his master’s degree. “I graduated with a degree that prepares me to be of service to others.”

“The UD Sinclair Academy gave me the tools, the network and the confidence to pursue opportunities and make an impact wherever I go,” said Mei-Lin Williams, a 2023 graduate who works in marketing for Kroger while staying active in community-based work.

Other graduates have gone into engineering, business and civilian Air Force work.

"Sinclair’s long-standing partnership with the University of Dayton is a cornerstone of our commitment to the Dayton region," said Steve Johnson, president and CEO at Sinclair. "Through the UD Sinclair Academy, we are removing barriers and creating a seamless, affordable pathway for our students to achieve their dreams. By combining Sinclair’s nationally ranked associate degree programs with the world-class opportunities at UD, we are ensuring that our students are not only part of two vibrant campus communities but are also receiving high-quality education with affordable tuition, which enables them to be uniquely prepared to succeed in our local workforce."
