UD’s Multi-Ethnic Education and Engagement Center celebrated the start of Black History Month Friday, February 6, with their annual Black History Month Lunch Kick-Off, hosting lunch for the community and welcoming faculty, staff and students to join together for a meal to celebrate Black history.

Dozens of community members formed a long line down the first-floor hallway of Alumni Hall to grab lunch and hear from author Michael Twitty, featured keynote speaker at this year’s Food & Culture Festival on campus. Twitty spoke to students about his book, “Recipes from the American South,” published last year.

“Black History Month is a time to honor the brilliance, resilience and leadership of Black communities from the past, present and future,” said MEC in a statement to the UD community February 2. “It invites us not only to reflect on the history we inherit, but to consider the responsibility we carry forward: to lead with purpose, uplift one another, and continue building spaces rooted in excellence, service and collective care.”

MEC will host more Black History Month programming throughout February, including the annual Black Action Through Unity Ball February 21.
