Stage set for future Flyers

From campus tours to final notes, Audition Day offers future Flyers a glimpse of life — and belonging — at UD.

On Valentine’s Day, the Department of Music and the Department of Dance, Theater and Performance Technology shared its love for the arts at Audition Day — a full, immersive experience designed to give prospective Flyers a true taste of life as a University of Dayton music student. At the heart of the day is the audition itself, where talent takes center stage.

“Our audition experience has been highly praised by students and parents alike and is often the determining factor in their college decision,” said Eric Knorr, lecturer of music.

Knorr, alongside student ambassadors, orchestrates a carefully timed schedule. The day includes tours of Fitz Hall and the Roger Glass Center for the Arts, a student and alumni panel, and culminates with the audition and a final interview with faculty members.

A hallmark of the experience is the “Flyer friend” program, which pairs each prospective student with a current music major.

“[Flyer friends] stay with their students throughout the entire process and answer any questions they may have,” said senior Rachel Gleberman. “Having a Flyer friend also helps alleviate any nerves [they] may have.”

Gleberman said the program also gives faculty and staff a fuller picture of each student beyond the audition room. “When I auditioned for UD, I felt that I was finally seen as a whole person instead of just a number,” she said. “Ultimately, before and during each Audition Day, we seek to be personable and supportive of every prospective student.”

For sophomore Emma Rustad, the day stands out for its inclusivity, welcoming students of all majors and musical backgrounds.

“I absolutely love getting to talk about the amazing opportunities the music department has for students who major in music and the students who are not music majors, but can still equally participate,” she said. “The University of Dayton is so special, and bragging about it is easy.”
