Our Community is Your Community

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority life advises 22 organizations; each is governed by a council. It is the responsibility of these councils to ensure that their affiliated organizations meet and comply with the expectations and guidelines implemented by their national office and the University of Dayton.

There are four councils advised by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at UD:

MGC promotes success in higher education and advances diversity, inclusion, and multicultural awareness, while catering to marginalized groups at the University of Dayton. The MGC creates a foundation for fellowship between fraternities and sororities with intentionally multi-ethnic, multicultural, gender-inclusive, and/or diverse memberships, and allows for their representation and voice on campus and within the Greater Dayton Community.

Joining a Sorority or Fraternity at UD

As a student interested in joining a Greek-letter organization, it is an exciting time to consider what is important to you as you seek an authentic sense of belonging. Recruitment events will offer you the opportunity to get to know active student members in each UD organization and ask mutually beneficial questions about a lifelong commitment to supporting values.

Eligibility

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life requires that all prospective members meet the following criteria in order to be eligible to receive a bid and become initiated into a fraternity or sorority:

  • Completed at least one semester of college (12 credit hours from any college; CCP and hours completed in high school do not apply).

  • Enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Dayton (at least a 12-credit course load during the semester you join).

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. (Transfer students without a UD cumulative GPA must submit a copy of their transcript from the institution where credits were earned, reflecting they have met the 2.5 GPA requirement prior to receiving a bid/invitation from a chapter.)

  • All students wishing to participate in any student organization must have completed the Hazing Prevention Module distributed by the University of Dayton. You will not be eligible for recruitment if you do not take this training. Please visit go.udayton.edu/hazingprevention to learn more.

  • Abide by all University and Council recruitment rules and policies.

Financial Responsibility

Joining a fraternity or sorority comes with an additional financial obligation to the chapter you join. Chapter dues, new members fees, insurance fees and other costs do apply. Fees vary by chapter. Many national organizations have financial assistance by way of scholarships to help offset the costs of membership. For more information, please reach out to our chapters via 1850.

Join a Panhellenic Sorority

At the University of Dayton, the College Panhellenic Council (CPC) holds deferred Formal Recruitment each year at the beginning of the spring semester. Our chapters also participate in an informal recruitment process known as Continuous Open Bidding or COB.

Formal Primary Recruitment

The primary recruitment process allows potential new members to connect with current members of our Panhellenic chapters and, through a 3-round mutual selection process, find their forever friends.

Continuous Open Bidding

Chapters also have the ability to accept new members through an ongoing open bidding process. Chapters are responsible for managing the COB process on their own and making connections with interested students directly.

Information and registration for COB can be found on 1850 by searching for "Panhellenic Council".

Visit Fraternity Events

You must register for IFC fraternity recruitment by February 5. Upon registration, you will be given a list of all registered recruitment events from each chapter and the overall IFC and University recruitment policies. We encourage you to visit as many events as you can from all available fraternities.

Note: Some fraternities' final events may take place on the Saturday and Sunday after the registration cutoff, and you may certainly attend these if you are registered.

Pursue Membership

A bid is a formal invitation to join, given by an individual fraternity that wishes to offer you membership. Remember, you must register by the deadline to be eligible to receive a bid to join. Bids are given out after the conclusion of the recruitment period. There is a standard date and time for all IFC fraternities. A fraternity uses its own internal constitution and by-laws to determine membership qualifications. A fraternity will inform you if its GPA requirement is higher than the University minimum of 2.5.

Intake

While each NPHC/MGC organization has their own unique new member process, typically, students will need to do the following to express their interest and join a chapter.

  • Informationals: To start the process, attendance to a chapter's informal or formal informational meetings is usually required.
  • Application: Chapters will ask you to fill out an application from their National organization, which typically requires a signature from Fraternity and Sorority Life
  • Interviews: Chapters and area alumni will invite you to an interview to get to know you and better understand your reasons for wanting to join their organization.
  • Selection: The chapter will ensure you meet all the requirements for membership before inviting you to join.
  • Intake/New Member Education Process: Intake or new member education consists of educational modules and preparation for your new member presentation.
  • New Member Presentation: Your public introduction to the campus community that you are now a member of your chapter.

To learn more about the Council, attend as many NPHC/MGC events as you can and attend the NPHC/MGC Informational hosted at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

Fraternity and Sorority Life Expansion and Extension

The University of Dayton Fraternity and Sorority Life community is always interested in learning more about your organization and discussing future expansion in the Interfraternity Council (NIC and other inter/national men's fraternities), Multicultural Greek Council (NALFO, NMGC, NAPA), and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Please contact Evan Englander, Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life for details.

Our Philosophy on Expansion/Extension

The University of Dayton’s philosophy on expansion/extension is a simple one: bring chapters to campus that will positively impact the lives of our students. As a private, Catholic, and Marianist university, UD seeks organizations that will be committed not only to the betterment of our Fraternity and Sorority Life community but indeed, the whole University of Dayton community and the Dayton community at large. An organization’s values as well as how its deeds align with those values must align with the mission, vision, and values of the University of Dayton and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
