Tackling Real-World Problems With Intelligent Sensing Solutions

UD's Applied Sensing Laboratory is a center for applied remote sensing research, with a particular focus on the research and development of signal and image processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition algorithms.

This lab is particularly concerned with applied remote sensing in the electro-optical and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, with a specific focus on student research in the areas of visible, infrared, hyperspectral, polarimetric, spectro-polarimetric, 3D imaging and data fusion.

Research Areas

  • Phenomenology studies
  • Vision-aided navigation
  • Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR)
  • Target detection
  • Target identification
  • Characterization

Our Mission

We prepare students for a career of impactful research in remote sensing using sensors to solve real-world problems. These skills are highly desirable within industry and will particularly impact engineering students who seek employment within the local Dayton Air Force community at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and the  Department of Defense in general.

Our students:

  • Focus on applied research that emphasizes well-principled science.
  • Design and execute scientific data collections.
  • Understand complexities associated with sensor calibration in remote sensing.
  • Develop successful algorithmic approaches that are robust to the difficulties encountered with real-world data.

Undergraduate Research Key to Finding Future Career Interests link-arrow link-arrow

For many undergraduate students in the School of Engineering, research is an integral part of their time as Flyers. Two students currently conducting research with associate professor Dr. Brad Ratliff in his Applied Sensing Lab have found a future career interest in research thanks to the experience.
