Engineering Competitions and Events

In the School of Engineering at UD, you'll have many opportunities to apply what you learn in the classroom, including a variety of competitions and events throughout the year.

Aero Design Team

UD team competes in an annual design competition where team members design, build and fly a remote-controlled airplane, learning key skills for careers in aerospace.

AICHE Chem-E-Car

In the annual American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE) Chem-E-Car competition, college students design and construct a car powered by a chemical energy source, that will safely run a specific given distance and stop.

ASCE Steel Bridge

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Steel Bridge Team participates in the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Student Steel Bridge Competition. At this event, teams develop a concept for a scale-model steel bridge to span approximately 20 feet and to carry 2,500 pounds according to the competition rules. They also must determine how to fabricate their bridge and then plan for an efficient assembly under timed construction conditions at the competition.

Baja SAE

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) holds yearly collegiate design competitions for hundreds of universities around the world. In Baja SAE, engineering students are tasked with designing and building a single-seat, all-terrain sporting vehicle that is to be a prototype for a reliable, maintainable, ergonomic and economic production vehicle that serves a recreational user market. The students must function as a team to design, engineer, build, test, promote and compete with a vehicle within the limits of the rules.

Engineers Week (E-Week)

The only event of its kind! Imagine having both the passion to make a difference in the world and the technical know-how to achieve it — that's what engineering is all about. E-Week is more than just a week-long event during the spring semester; it's a year-round commitment to making a difference.

It Flies! Competition

Our Merlin Flight Simulation Lab provides students interested in aerospace engineering with a unique opportunity to showcase their designs through the It Flies! aircraft design and handling competition.

All entries are flown and assessed on UD's MP521 flight simulator by experienced test pilots. Air Force lieutenant colonels, majors and generals from the Society of Experimental Test Pilots "fly" the student-designed simulations and contribute significantly to their aircraft design knowledge-base.

Mars Rover Team

UD multidisciplinary team designs, builds and programs a rover for international competition.

Redline Robotics

Redline Robotics — a combat robotics team — fights various bots against other competitors in three minute matches

Sigma Sigma Epsilon

Sigma Sigma Epsilon competes annually at the National Sales Engineering Conference, where they compete in case study competitions.

Solar Splash Team

Solar Splash is the World Championship of Collegiate Solar Boating; it takes place during a five-day competition.

Members on the UD team learn to use solar energy for transportation purposes and get hands-on experience with sustainable energy, energy management and the importance of efficiency and good design.
