Student Teams Provide Market, Equity Research

The UD Davis Center for Portfolio Management incorporates five student teams, made up of 80 undergraduates, to provide quality equity research to the Flyer Investments Fund. This allows for effective management of UD's student-run portfolio — the larget in the U.S., according to the Center for Investment Research.

By integrating academic theory with real-world investment skills, we strive to create an experiential learning environment that fosters both personal and professional development, provides opportunities to establish a comprehensive knowledge of the overall financial industry, and ultimately, produces well-rounded individuals equipped with the tools to be value-adding in today’s competitive society.

Portfolio Management Committee

Consists of 12-16 seniors from the School of Business Administration, enrolled in the course FIN 493 (Seminar in Investments). These students make all buy and sell decisions for the portfolio.

Each semester, the team presents to the Flyer Investments Advisory Council on the portfolio’s performance, positioning and trading activities that have transpired in the interim.

Economic Analysis Team

Provides a top-down view of the markets for the Flyer Investments Fund, monitoring key economic indicators and relevant current events to inform the creation of an Equity Outlook.

The Team Leader presents an Economic Outlook to the Portfolio Management Committee as part of the course FIN 493 (Seminar in Investments) and to the Flyer Investments Advisory Council. The report serves as a guide for sector allocation decisions within the Flyer Investments Fund.

Securities Analysis Team

Members serve as the supporting equity research analysts for the Flyer Investments Fund. They are responsible for analyzing current holdings and cumulatively making 20 new investment recommendations each semester to the Portfolio Management Committee.

Through diligent fundamental research, the Davis Center adheres to its Growth at a Reasonable Price (GARP) philosophy. The Flyer Investments Fund invests in companies with a sustainable competitive advantage that trade at a discount to our estimate of intrinsic value.

Ambassador Team

During Fall semester open houses, the team recruits and hires new freshman and sophomore members for the Davis Center. Ambassadors then conduct a 10-week extensive investment training program, including macroeconomic analysis, accounting, fundamental equity research and financial modeling (i.e., DCF). The 10-week long program culminates in an equity pitch to the Center.
