Ricardo Garcia Leads New Writing Center Initiative for Doctoral Students

By Katie Reynolds and Maha Azzazi

A Lifelong Passion for Education

Dr. García's journey into academics began as early as the second grade. Despite facing the challenges of learning English as a second language and adapting to a new culture, he found solace and inspiration in the classroom. His love for school, particularly in mathematics and reading, was nurtured by exceptional teachers. Although his initial college aspirations leaned towards advertising and music, a psychology class reignited his passion for education, ultimately leading him to pursue a career in academics.

Research Driven by Social Justice

As a critical theorist, Dr. García's research is deeply rooted in addressing social injustices. His work often seeks liberatory and emancipatory goals, inspired by influential thinkers like Paulo Freire, Henry Giroux, and Michel Foucault. One of his recent projects entails a collaboration with four other CPED recognized institutions focusing on the inequitable workload of faculty; in particular, investigating the importance of faculty-student interactions. Dr. García [RG1] believes that the magic between faculty and students can be hindered by excessive workloads, therefore advocating for a balance that allows for meaningful engagement.

Navigating the Challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Dr. García's most recent research project, published in March 2023, delved into the experiences of pre-service (student) teachers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducted in collaboration with Lindenwood University, the study revealed the resilience and creativity of cooperating teachers and pre-service teachers as they navigated unprecedented challenges. The pandemic forced educators to adapt quickly to online teaching, often with limited resources. This research underscores the importance of granting teachers the autonomy to innovate and adapt, emphasizing the impact of collective teacher efficacy.

Academic Freedom and the Marianist Influence

For Dr. García, academic freedom is about exploring and investigating without fear. It is a privilege that allows faculty members to pursue research interests, knowledge, and exercise their First Amendment rights through scholarship. The Catholic Marianist principles of collaboration, inclusivity, and receptivity deeply influence his work at the EdD program. Dr. García strives to create an inclusive environment where students feel heard and engaged, ensuring they are more than just recipients of course credits.

Impacting Change Through Action Research

The EdD program's design emphasizes action research, enabling students to effect change in their immediate environments. Dr. García is proud of the program's ability to foster practical applications of scholarly research, from corporate settings to educational institutions and even the military. Although the program is relatively new, its impact is already evident through the students' efforts to implement organizational change based on their research.

Pioneering Initiatives and Building Community

Dr. García highlights several departmental accomplishments, including the rapid development and implementation of the EdD program. He is particularly proud of the program's Write Site, established to support students in mastering dissertation writing. The center, launched after extensive feedback from students and faculty, aims to address the technical aspects of academic writing and research and is “facilitated by some of the most knowledgeable and student-centered writing specialists”, says García.

Another point for celebration, according to Dr. García, is the EdD program’s immersive experiences; in particular, its Immersions. These immersions, led by Dr. Olive and Dr. Wronowski, are designed to build community and foster a sense of belonging among students. The first immersion focuses on creating a supportive academic and social environment during our students’ first year, while the second immersion celebrates students' achievements and showcases their research studies upon successful completion of the EdD program.

Advice for Aspiring EdD Students

Dr. García offers valuable advice for students pursuing the EdD program. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the workload and financial commitments involved, encouraging students to take their time and not rush through the program. Building a strong relationship with their dissertation chair is crucial, as it ensures consistent guidance and support throughout the journey. Dr. García believes that this partnership is essential for a successful and fulfilling doctoral experience.

Dr. Ricardo Arévalo García's dedication to education, social justice, and student success shines through his work at the University of Dayton. His journey from a young student struggling to adapt to a respected academic leader is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education and the importance of nurturing the next generation of educators and leaders.
