Service for the Common Good
Doctoral students and faculty from the physical therapy program and undergraduates in the Pre-PT Club joined together for an inaugural Day of Service in October. October is National Physical Therapy Month and about 75 individuals volunteered a cumulative 225 hours of service in a single day.
"The Day of Service provided opportunities for our DPT students to give back to our greater Dayton community," said department chair and program director Mary Fisher. "Using our talents and gifts to make our community better is core to the Marianist charism. These students are exemplifying our vision to be the University for the Common Good."
The day was coordinated by the president for the Class of 2026, Jacob Hammye, and vice-president Olivia Miller. Their work was recognized and praised by the Ohio Physical Therapy Association. Seven sites across the Miami Valley welcomed volunteers to do a variety of activities.
"This experience has been a pleasure and an honor to orchestrate alongside my fellow class officers and department faculty," Hammye said. "Together, we've set a strong foundation for future service and growth, and I'm looking forward to seeing how our impact will continue to grow in the years to come."
Service is an integral part of the physical therapy program. Faculty member Matt Day volunteers his time at Good Neighbor House in Dayton every week and is frequently accompanied by students. Students also frequently volunteer their time with the Greene County chapter of AMBUCS to help build adaptive bicycles for local children.
