Why did you decide to earn a J.D.?
I viewed the law as a basic foundation of society and how it operates. Law touches every part of our lives on a daily basis. I thought knowledge of and the ability to apply it, would serve me well no matter what career path I chose beyond UDSL.
What was your experience like at UDSL?
Incredible. The professors, classmates, and overall learning environment were truly special. It was at UDSL where I learned so much about myself and developed a passion for learning, debate, and critical thinking. I like to say it altered the way I view the world around me which impacts all facets of my life to this day. While at UDSL I was fortunate enough to participate in mock trial, moot court, law review, and the student bar association– all of which helped round out my experience. I encourage current and prospective students to seek out extracurricular opportunities while at UDSL, you won’t regret it.
How has the J.D. helped with your career and what are you doing now?
Critical thinking, advocacy, and severe attention to detail are the three main things the J.D. assisted with in my current role. I currently work in State Government Affairs on behalf of a large pharmaceutical company. I spend most days drafting laws / amendments to laws and navigating complex regulatory environments. In turn, I advise corporate executives on strategy as it relates to advancing business interests. My J.D. formed every facet of my ability to advocate to lawmakers / Governors on behalf of my company. It also has helped me see what I call the full picture of public policy making, which VERY much includes having an intricate knowledge of litigation processes and constitutional implications.
What advice would you give a future lawyer?
Never stop learning and seeking out new information. You almost need to have a love for lifelong learning in our profession. The law and society at large are always changing, and FAST. Seek out mentors, colleagues, “legal” friends and most importantly, be willing to change your mind about a variety of issues that pertain to your work. Adversity will come your way - sometimes more than we like. Those who adapt and endure, will succeed. Period.
