Why did you decide to earn a J.D.?
As cliché as it sounds, I wanted to help people, those who are vulnerable and need someone who cares about them as people to assist them with legal matters. I wanted to use the skills and knowledge that I acquired with a J.D. to ensure that those people get the same fighting chance in our justice system as any other person—because they deserve it.
What was your experience like at UDSL?
My experience at UDSL transformed me into the person and lawyer I am today by laying the foundation I needed to be an ethical, considerate, and dedicated attorney. While I was at UDSL, I got a chance to explore my passions and take time to consider what my career could look like through various programs. I also got to meet some amazing people who became friends and colleagues who I am extremely proud of today.
How has the J.D. helped with your career and what are you doing now?
The J.D. catapulted me into a career that I enjoy, and one where I’m doing exactly what I set out to do—helping marginalized and vulnerable people, while working to make a change in our judicial system. Currently, I work for a national nonprofit organization that advocates for an economy where debt doesn’t limit opportunities.
What advice would you give a future lawyer?
A J.D. offers such a wide range of opportunities; make sure you take the time to consider all the ways you can use a J.D., and remember you can make a difference, even a small one. Do not let money dictate every step in your career; let purpose drive you.
