Prepared for the Future

Portrait of Kristen Cochran '24

Why did you decide to earn a J.D.?

When utilized correctly, the law is a phenomenal channel through which you can have a lasting impact on someone's life. A J.D. degree allows me to make a difference in the lives of others every single day by guiding and advising clients of the protections and rights they have under the law. As an estate planning attorney, specifically, I am able to help my clients be proactive in protecting what they have worked so hard for throughout their lives and that brings so much fulfillment to me every day.

What was your experience like at UDSL?

As hard as law school was, I loved my time at UDSL. My professors were so helpful and supportive all along the way and I could tell that they wanted their students to succeed. UDSL wasn't a cutthroat environment like many law schools can be and I appreciated that. I made lifelong friends at UDSL and I had the opportunity to also make so many valuable connections with others in the legal profession as well during my time there.

How has the J.D. helped with your career and what are you doing now?

Law school taught me confidence, perseverance, and the critical thinking skills that are needed to be successful as an attorney. Law school can be grueling at times and there were many moments that the weight of it felt crushing. But, I continued to persevere, work hard and have confidence that I studied hard and that has carried over into my career in many ways. Today, I am an estate planning attorney at Roberson Law in Kettering, Ohio. I absolutely love what I do and where I get to work every day!

What advice would you give a future lawyer?

Never give up and have confidence that if you put the work in, study hard, and do your absolute best, you can do this! Law school is TOUGH, but it is the best feeling in the world when you walk across that stage and get your diploma, pass the bar exam, and get sworn in as a licensed attorney. When you're exhausted and ready to quit, remember why you pursued this career and always keep that at the forefront to push you through.
