Opportunities and Activities

From research to events to student organizations, there are many ways to get involved and gain practical experience through mathematics at UD.

Research Opportunities

All majors complete an individual capstone project under the direction of a faculty member. Students have opportunities to engage in undergraduate research through UD-funded summer fellowships. If you are interested in research, we encourage you to also pursue summer research opportunities through the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates program.

Mathematics Events

Mathematics Colloquium

The department colloquia are held most Thursdays throughout the fall and spring semesters. All are invited to attend.

Alumni Career Seminar

The Alumni Career Seminar is a biennial event, held in every even-numbered year since 1964. Students interested in mathematics meet with our alumni to learn first-hand the breadth of career opportunities in the mathematical sciences and how they can use mathematics in their careers.

Undergraduate Mathematics Day

Undergraduate Mathematics Day is a biennial event, held in odd-numbered years, to celebrate all forms of undergraduate mathematics, from research and learning to teaching and history. We invite talks by both students and faculty.

William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition

William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is held annually in early December, and is open to all undergraduate students enrolled in colleges in the U.S.A. and Canada.

Integration Bee

The Integration Bee is a competition similar to a spelling bee, with competitors solving problems from integral calculus. The University of Dayton Integration Bee is held annually as part of the Stander Symposium.

High School Math Contest

The High School Math Contest is a contest for local high school students interested in mathematics, organized and funded by the University of Dayton Math Club.

Student Organizations

Math Club and Pi Mu Epsilon

We have a thriving Math Club and a chapter of the national mathematics honor society Pi Mu Epsilon. The Math Club is student-run under the guidance of a faculty member. It organizes and hosts the annual High School Mathematics Contest for area high school students.

Data Analytics Club

The Data Analytics Club is a student-run organization focused on fostering skills in data analytics and visualization. Through workshops, competitions and real-world projects, members gain hands-on experience while networking with peers, alumni and industry professionals. The club also hosts guest speakers and social events, creating a supportive community for aspiring data analysts to thrive and collaborate.
