Visa and Financial Documentation for Graduate Students

The University of Dayton and the United States Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement require that students who plan to enter the U.S. meet certain requirements.

F-1 and J-1 students must provide financial documentation showing sufficient funds to cover the first year of study.

Acceptable funding sources will be selected on the admission application:

  • Self Supported – Student Funds
  • Self Supported – Educational Loan
  • Sponsored – Government
  • Sponsored – Individual (Family member, friend, etc.)
  • Sponsored – Employer

After submission, relevant financial forms will be available for students to complete on their Admission Account application checklist.

All relevant financial documentation must be uploaded to the student application checklist. Immigration documents will not be provided without sufficient and valid financial documentation.

Financial Documentation

Bank Statement

  • Financial documents must be issued in English or be accompanied by a certified English translation.
  • Bank statements must be issued from a financial institution within the last six months and list the account holder name, account number and balance. Retirement, investment and business accounts are not accepted.
  • The amount shown on the bank statement must be equal to or greater than the cost of attendance for your program listing the owner of the account, account number and balance.
  • Should include liquid funds only and list the minimum one-year cost of attendance at UD. Property documents, salary statements, retirement, investment and business accounts are not accepted.

Letter of Financial Support

  • All financial requirement checklist items will be available on the student Admission Account after application submission.
  • Your sponsor letter of financial support will follow a template provided on the Admission Account.
  • This is a signed statement from each individual listed as the account holder(s) on the bank statement.
  • The statement should list the relationship to the student (mother, father, uncle, etc.).
  • The statement should list the amount of support being given to the student for one year.
  • A letter of financial support is NOT required if the student is supporting themselves.

Copy of Passport

  • A photocopy of the applicant's will be uploaded to the application.
  • If you currently reside in the U.S., please email a copy of your current visa to goglobalgraduate@udayton.edu.

Loan Sanction Letter

  • Your loan approval letter must be issued by a loan lender and include the name of the student receiving the loan and the amount of funding.
  • Loans covering the full cost of attendance must be equal to or greater than the cost of attendance of your program.

Government Sponsor Letter

  • Your government sponsorship letter must include the name of the student being sponsored and the amount of funding being provided.
  • Email goglobalgraduate@udayton.edu for additional guidance if your government requires an admission letter before issuing the letter of financial support.

Employer Sponsor Letter

  • Your employer sponsorship letter must include the employer’s name, the name of the student being sponsored and the amount of funding being provided.
  • Sponsorships covering the full cost of annual attendance must be equal to or greater than the cost of attendance of your program.

Dependent Information Form

  • A Dependent Information Form will be needed if you will be accompanied by a spouse and/or child to the U.S. during your education at UD.
  • The form should be completed using the template provided on your admission checklist on the Admission Account.

I-20 and U.S. Visa

Students who need the F-1 student visa should obtain the I-20 form from the University of Dayton and secure a U.S. visa.

Process for Obtaining a Visa

  • Students must confirm enrollment by logging into their Admission Account and paying the enrollment deposit. The enrollment deposit is non-refundable and is applied to a student’s tuition.
  • The University of Dayton will issue and email the I-20 form within a week of enrollment confirmation. Please note that the University of Dayton may request updated financial documents from a student if they are expired prior to issuing the I-20 form.
  • Students must pay the SEVIS fee.
  • Students must take the I-20 form, the admission letter, and any other applicable documents to their visa interview.

Students Transferring From Another U.S. Institution

  • Students transferring to the University of Dayton from another U.S. Institution (e.g., secondary school, a community college or another university), need to submit a request to their current institution to transfer a student’s SEVIS record to the University of Dayton.
  • Upon enrollment confirmation, students will be connected to the office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). This dedicated team will ensure support of your I-20 and help you transition to life in the U.S. and on our campus.
