English Proficiency

All students are required to submit proof of English proficiency for admission to the University of Dayton. Proof of English proficiency must be submitted directly from the testing center using UD's institution code (1834).

Some graduate programs may require a higher proficiency score for full admission. Please check with your department for their specific requirements.


Test Options

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

A minimum score of 4.5 (80 on the previous score scale) on the Internet-based test is required for full admission.

ETS is offering a special at-home edition of the TOEFL test; visit the ETS website to determine if you qualify to take it.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

A minimum band score of 6.5 is required for full admission.

IELTS offers an online version; visit the IELTS indicator website for further information.

International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP)

A minimum overall score of 4.5 is required for full admission.

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE)

A minimum score of 60 is required for full admission.

Duolingo English Test (DET)

A minimum score of 110 is required for full admission.

ELS

Level 112 Certificate is required for full admission.

Cambridge (C1 Advanced)

A minimum score of 160 is required for full admission.


Exemptions

You are exempt from the English proficiency requirement if you received a bachelor degree or higher from one of the following:

  • A regionally-accredited institution in the United States.
  • An institution that conducts instruction in English in Australia, Belize, English-speaking countries in the Caribbean, English-speaking provinces of Canada, Ghana, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, Nigeria or the United Kingdom.
