Graduate Certificate

The principal preparation certificate is one of UD's educator preparation programs, which provide you with the opportunity to: broaden your scope of education; allow for job variability; enhance professional versatility and achieve career goals; thrive in an increasingly connected world; develop the skills and make an impact on the youth of today.

Courses are designed to help you hone your passion and advance as a professional in the education setting. Our programs lead to the state of Ohio issued professional license and to a certificate issued by the University of Dayton. Students in the principal preparation program need a passing score on the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) to fulfill the state of Ohio testing


Program Overview

Certificate Information and Courses

For students who have completed the Educational Leadership M.S.E. program (or a comparable master's program). This is an online certificate program.

Candidates must do the following:

  • Complete 12 hours of designated educator preparation coursework (principal).
  • Provide evidence of two years of successful teaching experience under a standard teaching credential.
  • Obtain a passing score of 220 on the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) state test.

The principal program coursework meets the course requirements for the State of Ohio issued Principal license. Students may earn the professional educator license with a Principal focus by holding a master's degree in educational leadership, or its equivalent, and completing the 12 semester hours of required coursework; providing evidence of two years of successful teaching experience under a standard (not alternative) teaching credential on the level for which the administrative license is sought; and obtaining a passing score on the OAE state testing requirement.

The online Educational Leadership M.S.E. has an optional principal licensure component.

Application and Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission to any certificate program will satisfy the following requirements based upon academic standing:

  1. University of Dayton graduate students with a minimum 3.0 GPA can apply.
  2. University of Dayton undergraduate students can apply upon attaining senior standing (90 semester hours) with a minimum 3.5 GPA.
  3. Professionals wishing to obtain the certificate only must have completed a bachelor's degree as verified by a transcript when applying to the certificate program.

Notes

  • Once admitted, University of Dayton undergraduates may apply these 12 graduate credit towards their undergraduate requirements, depending on the major. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss the matter with their advisors.
  • Students may pursue more than one certificate program, however double-counting is not allowed. Students must earn 12 unique credits for each certificate.
