Nativities exhibit opens Nov. 16

Shepherds and angels, but also bakers, farmers, butchers, the blacksmith and even the mayor gather to see baby Jesus in the University of Dayton’s largest Nativity on display during this year’s free Christmas exhibit.

“It Takes a Village: Christmas in Community” is open to the public Nov. 16 through Jan. 15 in Roesch Library.

“Nativity scenes aren’t always just about the Holy Family; sometimes artists bring entire communities into the story,” said curator Bridget Retzloff. “It’s a reminder that the joy of Christmas is best shared with others.”

Along with the provençal village, which features more than 200 figures, the exhibit includes:

  • Delicate paper Nativity sets featuring animals and villagers surrounding the Holy Family.
  • A large Fontanini Nativity set that highlights the Nativity traditions of St. Francis.
  • A seek-and-find activity, ornament craft and touchscreen with video and digital content for visitors of all ages.

More information, including hours, closure dates and parking, is available on the exhibit page.

The Marian Library is an international research destination devoted to Mary, mother of Jesus. It holds more than 3,600 Nativity sets, as well as books, periodicals, artworks and other artifacts.
