The Choose Ohio First program awarded the University of Dayton $1,355,380 to recruit and graduate students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

The Ohio Department of Higher Education’s scholarship program aims to strengthen the state’s economy by building a pipeline of STEM graduates to meet Ohio’s workforce needs.

Up to 15 scholarships are available annually to UD students in biochemistry, pre-medicine and engineering, among others.

“Choose Ohio First grants help provide students access to a University of Dayton education in high-demand STEM fields and real-world, hands-on learning opportunities without the worry of having to work more hours to afford school,” said Darlene Weaver, University of Dayton provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.

Since 2019, the University has received more than $11 million for Choose Ohio First scholarships.

"Financial support from the scholarship has played a meaningful role in helping me pursue my career and professional goals by reducing the financial pressure associated with college," said Alex York, a UD civil engineering major. "This has allowed me to focus more on my coursework and fully engage in experiential learning opportunities like internships, which are critical in the civil engineering field. This support also has given me the flexibility to get involved in student organizations and professional development activities that strengthen my leadership and communication skills.

"Overall, the scholarship has made it possible for me to invest more time and energy into becoming a well-rounded, career-ready engineer."
