Research Visits

The Marian Library welcomes visitors Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are open by appointment on Mondays (closed to walk-in visitors). Appointments with faculty and staff must be made at least two business days in advance. We are closed to all visitors on weekends and major holidays.

Using Library Materials

What do you need? Explore Marian Library materials to borrow, access online or use on site.

Can I Borrow Books and Materials?

Discover borrowing options available based on an affiliation with the University of Dayton or another academic library. Learn what is available to those from the general public.

UD Campus Community and Courtesy Card Holders

The Marian Library includes books that can be checked out by University of Dayton students, faculty and staff, as well as eligible borrowers with a courtesy card.

As an eligible borrower, you have a personal library account. Log in to review your checked-out materials and the status of items you’ve requested.

Visitors Affiliated With Other Academic Libraries

Visitors affiliated with other academic libraries may request materials through their institution’s interlibrary loan (ILL) service. Those without an affiliation to an academic library must contact the Marian Library if they wish to borrow materials through a public library ILL system.

Some formats, such as audiovisual and oversize materials, are not available through interlibrary loan. All interlibrary loans are subject to the discretion of library staff regarding materials’ condition, age, and rarity. The Marian Library does not mail books or other collection materials.

General Public

Visitors without a University of Dayton ID or courtesy card may use Marian Library materials in the seventh-floor reading room. Appointments are strongly encouraged so we can retrieve materials ahead of time.

When Should I Schedule an Appointment to Use Materials?

  • If you plan to use materials such as art, archival collections and rare books an appointment is required.
  • If you are a visitor with no University of Dayton ID or courtesy card and would like to use books and materials in the seventh-floor reading room an appointment is strongly encouraged.
  • If you are planning to visit from out of town, contact the Marian Library in advance to ensure that the materials and personnel are available. When you alert us to your visit, please also provide a list of materials you hope to consult.

Schedule an appointment online, email marianlibrary@udayton.edu or call 937-229-4214.

Printing, Scanning and Copying

Personal Devices

  • The use of phones, tablets and cameras for note-taking purposes, as long as library materials are not damaged in the process, is welcome. Camera flash and portable scanners that come into contact with the materials (e.g., flatbed scanners) are not permitted.
  • The library can provide book weights, cradles and other supports to facilitate safely photographing materials in the reading room.

Overhead Scanner

  • Located in the seventh-floor reading room, this scanner is available for patron use. Scans can be shared via QRC, email or USB drive.
  • A vending machine that sells USB drives is located on the first floor of Roesch Library.

Multifunction Devices

  • FlyerPrint devices offer pay-for-print service, copying and scanning for the UD community. To print to a FlyerPrint device, add a FlyerPrint print queue to your device. There are two FlyerPrint devices on the first floor across from Information Point.
  • Visitor printing and copying is not available in the Marian Library or in Roesch Library. We suggest using campus Print and Copy Services.
