Out of Context

Misty Thomas-Trout November 04, 2025

How did I get here? It is a long, personal, complex, boringly intriguing story. I am not the crème de la crème of graphic design. I am not even a mediocre artist.

I am, however, a dope graphic artist who is excruciatingly excellent at typography and super obsessed with letters and words and how they influence culture. My design process varies and is dependent upon the context of the project. My recent body of work, OUT OF CONTEXT: Try Not to Take it Personal, includes letterpress printing, collage, digital printing on fabric, vinyl lettering, audio and ashes.

The 13x19 posters visualize statements I collected from overheard public conversations and private, intimate ones.

The layered thoughts and mixed messages create an overwhelming sense of disinformation and miscommunication through the very nature of their out-of-context origin. They create an environment where graphic design transcends function and becomes a vessel for vulnerability.
