It’s a beautiful place to sit —

just as it’s been for the past 142 years. Originally known as the “kiosk,” the gazebo was built around 1882 in a park that also held a small shrine to Mary. The structure has had a lively history, including as a location for band concerts and annual performances by the men’s chorus. Alumni through time have picked this spot for proposals, as nearly 8,000 alumni are married to each another. But on this day, at this time, the gazebo provides a quiet, solitary place to relish the start of the school year — and get a jump on the homework.

From despair, a stone of hope
