When Light Breaks Through: A Salem Witch Trials Story

Brenda Murphy ’71

In her latest historical novel, Brenda Murphy ’71 chronicles the story of 12-year-old Ann Putnam, the ringleader of the “afflicted children” whose witchcraft accusations in 1692 devastated Salem Village. Five years later, a young schoolteacher named Joseph Green takes on the Salem Village ministry and is eager to mend the bitter discord that divides the community. He and Ann form an unlikely bond. Based on real people and grounded in historical research, Murphy adds this tale of redemption and rebuilding community to her list of published novels.

Anna Luepke ’23

Anna Luepke’s Hope! connects themes of resilience, perseverance and faith through the stories of seven older people who live in St. Mary Development Corp.'s affordable apartment communities in Dayton. Luepke wrote the book during her ethics and leadership internship as an economics and political science major. Spending the summer of 2022 interviewing St. Mary residents, Luepke sought to offer a listening ear. As residents opened up about their triumphs and struggles, Luepke recognized how rare it is to take the time to truly listen to someone’s story. Hope! reminds readers that listening isn’t always about trying to solve people’s problems but gaining an understanding of who they are.
