Three figures in a floral landscape

Three figures in a floral landscape

Teaching figure drawing at UD from 1971 to 1997 gave me images from the classroom for this painting.

I enjoy layering shapes and color to hide images from immediate recognition. Finding the references in my paintings requires time and patience. I hope the “aha!” moment brings pleasant surprise to the viewer. Art takes time to create and also to respond to.

The sensuous lines and contours of the human figure are repeated with floral reference to capture life’s delicacy and fragile nature. Triangles, perhaps representing masculine principle, bring order and contrast to flowing shapes and color. Visual play in and out of the landscape encourages a sense of our interdependence with nature.

My inspiration is Peter Paul Rubens, who hides his composition of diagonal lines and circular movement under the complex flow of human figures and activity. In art there is more going on under the surface than first meets the eye.
