Expand Your Horizons

The Tobias Global Leaders program was established through a landmark $5 million gift to ensure that UD students — regardless of financial background — have the chance to become a global citizen. Specifically designed for incoming first-year Pell Grant recipients, this program provides the financial, academic and personal support needed to make international study a reality.

Why Become a Tobias Global Leader?

We know that for many students, the barriers to studying abroad aren't just about the plane ticket — they are about the "how-to" and the "what-next". This program is built to support you every step of the way.

Program Benefits

If selected for this elite cohort, you will receive:

  • A $3,000 Scholarship: Directly applied to cover part of the cost of your chosen Global and Intercultural Affairs (GIA) Center program.
  • The "Global Mini-Course": A 1-credit course focused on personal, professional, and academic planning to ensure your time abroad aligns with your career goals.
  • Travel Support: We cover the cost of your passport or the equivalent cost to put toward other travel expenses.
  • Zero Application Fees: GIA education abroad application fees are waived for Tobias Leaders.
  • Mentorship: Ongoing support from a GIA staff member before, during and after your return to Dayton.
  • A Professional Network: Intentional reflection and opportunities to share your journey with UD faculty, alumni and staff, integrating your global learning into your future career path.

Bridging the Gap Between Dayton and the World

The Tobias Global Leaders program isn't just about travel; it's about transformation. By joining this program, you join a legacy of leaders who use their global perspectives to solve local and international challenges.

Application Process

Incoming first-year students receiving a Pell Grant are eligible for this program. Students selected for the Flyer Promise Scholars program are not eligible, because they receive significant financial support from other sources.

Eligible students should watch their email in early May for an invitation to apply to the program. The application is easy — just answer a few brief questions to tell us about your interest in studying abroad and how you think it will help you reach your future goals.

The application deadline is May 17, 2026. GIA will review all applications and notify selected students in late May.
