Margaret Pinnell

Margie Pinnell is a professor in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering. She served as the assistant provost for learning and executive director of the Ryan C. Harris Learning Teaching Center from 2022-2023, interim dean of the School of Engineering from 2021-2022, associate dean for faculty and staff development from 2015-2021 and the Bernhard Schmidt Chair in Engineering Leadership from 2018-2022.

Dr. Pinnell began her faculty appointment in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering in 2000, attained tenure in 2009, and was promoted to the rank of professor in 2019. She has served as assistant dean for recruitment and outreach and led the Engineering in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities for Service-Learning (ETHOS) program from 2001-2010. 

In addition to active service in the department, school and university, Margie has worked with the Dayton Regional STEM Center, Air Camp USA, and was named a Blue Angels Key Influencer in 2018. Currently she serves as the chair of the DO STEM Ecosystem and on the boards of the Ohio PKAL (Project Kaleidoscope) and Women in Engineering ProActive Network. Her research interests include K-12 STEM, professional development, community engaged learning and experimental mechanics of materials. She has secured more than $2.8 million in external funding including six NSF grants.

• Bernhard Schmidt Chair in Engineering Leadership (2018-2022) - this endowed chair position was created to establish the School of Engineering as a school of excellence and a leader in engineering education.
• Lackner Award, 2018 - this university level award is among the highest awards given annually to two UD faculty or staff who, over a long period of time, have made a significant contribution to the Catholic and Marianist character of the University of Dayton.

Teaching

• University of Dayton Alumni Award in Teaching, 2008, is the highest-level teaching award given at the University of Dayton to honor excellence in teaching, given annually to a faculty member who has a distinguished record of teaching for at least three terms.
• SOCHE Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award, 2008, Southwestern Ohio Consortium of Higher Education, dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge sharing, and effective professional development programs, this award recognizes faculty from member institutions for teaching excellence. 
• Best Female Professor Phi Sigma Rho, 2005, by the University of Dayton chapter of Phi Sigma Rho recognizes excellence in teaching by a female professor, one annual award.
• Ohio Magazine Excellence in Education Award, 2005, recognizes teachers at Ohio Colleges and Universities for their outstanding achievements in education.
• American Society of Engineering Education, North Central Section, Outstanding Teaching Award, 2005, recognizes outstanding classroom performance of engineering and engineering technology teachers, one annual award.
• University of Dayton, School of Engineering, Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2004, given annually to a single faculty in the School of Engineering to recognize outstanding accomplishments in teaching.

• Blue Angels Key Influencer, 2018, helps to shape attitudes and opinions of youth in their communities. The Key Influencer rides with the Blue Angels at the Dayton Air Show.
