Carlos Gardeazabal Bravo

Dr. Gardeazabal Bravo’s research and teaching interests focus on human rights narratives,
environmental humanities, the cultural politics of emotion, and critical theory in contemporary
Latin American literature and film. Some examples of these intersections include his book
Empatía reflexiva. Narrativas latinoamericanas sobre derechos humanos, memoria y trauma del
siglo XXI (De Gruyter, 2026), the co-edited volume Human Rights in Colombian Literature and
Cultural Production: Embodied Enactments (Routledge, 2022), as well as published articles and
co-edited academic dossiers on environmental humanities, humanitarianism, and cultural
representations of violence in Latin America.

He actively participates in public scholarship, contributing to discussions on the impact of Latin
American human rights narratives on websites such as The Conversation and Critical Legal
Thinking. In this spirit of community engagement, he co‑organized the Latin American Film
Festival Communities in Action (with Dr. Arne Romanowski) and has created student‑centered
podcasts and radio programs. These projects integrate academic research with community
outreach, expanding conversations about the Latin American and Latinx cultural world beyond
the classroom.
