Profile

Lisa Oakley holds the position of lecturer and lab coordinator for the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences at UD. Her educational background includes an undergraduate degree in biology, a graduate degree in geology, ASCP certification as a Histology Technician and work toward a graduate certification in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

She has extensive clinical pathology laboratory experience, specializing in histological tissue microtomy, embedding, staining and frozen sectioning. This work was foundational to her graduate research which used histologic methods and petrographic microscopy in a novel approach to analyze thin sections of rocks and fossils from the Silurian Brassfield Formation. She also worked as a research and GIS analyst in nonprofit and local government positions, collecting geospatial data to create professional maps for use in educational outreach, city event planning and government infrastructure management. But she considers the most fulfilling parts of her career to be her work as an educator and volunteer, passions that have earned her awards in both, including a recognition by the Ohio House of Representatives.

As Lab Coordinator, Lisa enjoys combining her enthusiasm for science and teaching in creative ways, designing educational material for the lab exercises, manual and course sites. She considers herself a life-long learner and advocate for social, educational and environmental justice. Outside of work, she enjoys volunteering with the Beaver Creek Wetlands Association as a program educator and water quality team lead, and the Greene County Parks & Trails helping restore Bluebird populations. You can usually find her outside, hiking, camping, fossil collecting or in her backyard cultivating her own wildlife habitat.
