Graduate Certificate

The University of Dayton's certificate in reading preparation will set you up to be an expert in teaching children of all ages to read. The certificate program — designed for working teachers — leads to a state of Ohio reading endorsement for PK-12 licensed teachers.

Through this program, you will learn how to identify readers who are struggling. You'll learn different techniques and approaches to get these readers back on track. Grounded in the science of reading, you'll learn how to teach literacy and instill a love of literature that will help children simultaneously learn to read and read to learn at every age.

Program Overview

Certificate Information and Courses

This certificate program is designed for working teachers — the heaviest course loads occur during the summer, with practical application classes held concurrently with the school year.

To be eligible for the state of Ohio reading endorsement, you must already have a teaching license. Students who are not licensed teachers but are still interested in gaining knowledge in skills in reading preparation are still welcome to enroll in and earn the UD certificate.

The four-course program is designed to be taken in a cohort model, meaning you'll be with the same group of students for all four classes. This allows you to build rapport with your classmates and network with other teachers.

Students who are interested in continuing beyond the certificate in reading preparation can apply all of their certificate courses towards a Master's in Educational Leadership with a concentration in literacy. The master's degree requires 10 courses, so having completed these four would give you a significant head start on the master's coursework.

Several courses in this certificate overlap with the literacy concentration of the educational leadership M.S.E. You may apply the courses taken for this certificate toward the M.S.E.

Admission Requirements

Pre-Requisites

There are four courses grounded in phonics and literary science that lay the foundation for the certificate in reading preparation. Many students meet most or all of these prerequisites from their undergraduate degree. Contact us for a transcript evaluation to determine which of your courses will count toward the prerequisites.
