His mother named him "Kobe" after her favorite NBA player, shooting guard Kobe Bryant.
While growing up with the name of a basketball superstar was excellent motivation for a future Flyer guard, junior Kobe Elvis said he was aware that he could never be Bryant.
“I don’t have his physique, his build. I can’t do what he did,” Elvis told columnist Tom Archdeacon ’72 of the Dayton Daily News. “But that’s not saying there aren’t some things you can’ttake from his game. And I tried to be the best Kobe I could be.”
Being his best includes holding the Flyer men’s record for consecutive free throws made — 37, a milestone Elvis achieved Jan. 16. (Bryant sunk 8,378 free throws during his decade with the Los Angeles Lakers, No. 3 on the all-time NBA list.)
