Office or art gallery?

Office or art gallery?

Larry Smith, a clinical assistant professor in the department of education administration, started his career as a high school art teacher. Initially a medical illustration major, Smith transitioned to an art and photography dual major, and has a special interest in architectural art and is inspired by nature and landscapes.

He said one of his favorite things about UD is the architecture, especially the chapel dome. It's the subject of many of his works. In his office is a painting he did of Chaminade Hall for the previous department chair when he retired. The watercolor painting he did as a test run beforehand sits on a table close to his desk.

Smith still works as an artist, where his primary mediums are paints and stained glass. His office is home to a number of his works, and he occasionally swaps out old paintings for some of his newer ones. One of his special projects is a progressive Christmas painting. Around Christmas each year, he adds a new element onto the painting. Whether it be pedestrians walking around the townscape, more snow on the rooftops, or cars on the road, the painting becomes more unique each year.

Smith said he always advocates for the arts because he believes it teaches creativity, thinking and collaboration — all essential skills. One day, when he has more time, he wants to take more art classes and continue learning about his craft.

Until then, he'll just add a few more pieces to his walls.
