Machining and Fabrication
Unparalleled Experience and Precision
UDRI maintains fully equipped machine facilities. Our Chief Machinists participate in integrated product development teams to ensure producibility and maintainability. Each of our machinists has 20 to 40 years of experience and can work from detailed drawings to vague sketches or verbal descriptions.
Capabilities
- Assembly and final fitting of complex pieces of mechanical assemblies
- CAD/CAM assisted 3-dimensional 4/5 axis milling of components
- Experimental fabrication and machining
- Fabrication of special jigs, fixtures, apparatus, and complex material shapes
- Layout, gauging, and inspection
- Low-stress machining, grinding, and polishing
- Mechanical measurements
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Tensile and fatigue test specimen machining
- Welding and painting
UDRI machinists are integral members of design and manufacturing teams for complex test apparatus and prototype systems. Examples include automated five-axis optical test fixtures used by U.S. transparency manufacturers for optical acceptance inspection of each windshield and canopy they fabricate, and a Mach 6 Ludwieg Tube wind tunnel designed, fabricated, and commissioned by UDRI for the Air Force Research Laboratory.
