THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Today's COVID-19 vaccine clinic is canceled

The University received news yesterday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will pause use of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine at federal sites and will urge state sites to do so. Ohio Gov. DeWine also has issued advice to pause administration of the J&J vaccine. In consultation with our medical advisory panel and in light of these government announcements, we are canceling the COVID-19 vaccination clinic scheduled for today at UD Arena until further notice. The University and its medical advisory panel will continue to monitor developments in the CDC's examination of six cases involving blood clots in the weeks following use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and advise you to do so as well. We will communicate substantive information as we have it available.

According to Dr. Steve Burdette of the University's medical advisory panel, "while a concern and worthy of investigation, the risk appears to be exceedingly small and it is not confirmed it is even related to vaccination. At this time pausing the use is prudent until more information is available." Dr. Burdette said symptoms include pain and swelling in the legs, chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, blurry vision and weakness on your face and limbs. You can read more information from the CDC and FDA here; in their joint statement, they advise people who experience any of those symptoms within three weeks after a J&J vaccination to contact their health care provider. Students also can contact the UD Student Health Center at 937-229-3131. For emergencies, call 911 or UD Public Safety at 937-229-2121.
