2017 John E. Riley Award Winner

It is with great pleasure that Student Development announces the winner of the thirty-second annual John E. Riley award.  This award provides recognition to a junior student who has exercised sustained leadership through involvement with student initiatives, exemplifying the educational and service values of the University and Marianists.

This year’s recipient is Meg Maloney a junior, Environmental Biology major from Glen Ellyn, Illinois.  Meg is the past president and now a student advisor of the Sustainability Club, a River Steward and on the City of Dayton environmental advisory board.  One of Meg’s biggest passions is sustainability and working with the Hanley Sustainability Institute gives her the opportunity to make a difference here on our campus. Meg has collaborated with Dining Services to help start a composting program in residential dorms in order to expand composting on campus. Meg is a bible study leader through Campus Crusade for Christ and was inspired by Bro. Don Geiger to work with the Beavercreek Wetlands Association to help restore the wetlands in Green County.   Among other things, Meg has worked as a volunteer at the Men’s Gateway shelter through St. Vincent DePaul, and currently helps train service dogs for children with disabilities.

“Throughout my time at the University of Dayton, I have made it my goal to educate as many people as I can about the importance of sustainability. Through my involvement, there is a continuous theme about my passion for environmental education, servant leadership, and my catholic values. “

Meg was nominated by Dr. Rebecca Potter and Dr. Ryan McEwan and will be honored at an upcoming ceremony.

The other finalists were Madison Burgei, Karin Forsthoefel, Lauren Rivera, Carlos Rodriguez and Brett Slaughenhaupt.
