Updated information on instructional modalities for all fall semester courses

Good afternoon.

We are pleased to inform you that updated information on instructional modalities for all fall semester courses is now available on the University's registration site. As we indicated in our July 14 communication, courses may be delivered in three different modalities — face-to-face, blended, and remote learning. Your faculty have worked very hard during the summer to design courses that will not only allow you to progress toward your degree, but also reflect the distinctive, engaging, academically excellent UD educational experience you value. 

Although physical distancing requirements and room capacities will change the classroom experience, there will be ample opportunity to interact with your professors and classmates. Over 80% of undergraduate courses will be offered either fully face-to-face or in a blended format, while the remainder will be delivered through remote learning. 

Room capacity has had the greatest impact on course modalities. Because the University of Dayton has historically kept class sizes small to foster community, we do not have many large lecture spaces of the sort one would find on larger public campuses. This means that most of our classrooms can now seat only between 7 and 25 students at one time due to public health physical distancing requirements. 

Some small classes will fit into their assigned rooms.  These classes will be designated as face-to-face.  Face-to-face courses are offered in the traditional mode.  Students attend class in-person on the days and times indicated on their schedules. Faculty will work to accommodate students who become ill or may need to quarantine; however, students who plan to be away from campus for all or most of the semester should not register for face-to-face courses.

Most classes will be delivered in a blended format. This means students will attend the class face-to-face for some part of the week and attend remotely the other part of the week or engage in asynchronous modules or lectures in preparation for the face-to-face class meetings.  When students attend remotely, these class sessions will be synchronous, meaning students will attend remotely at the scheduled day and time, interacting with the professor and classmates in real time. Asynchronous modules use online learning resources to facilitate information sharing outside the constraints of time and place among a group of students; students will learn the same material at different times and locations. Both the face-to-face and synchronous remote class sessions will be held on the scheduled day and time. Faculty who are teaching blended courses are encouraged to start their fall semester classes online so they can explain the new format and attendance expectations.  This will be helpful for students who may still be in quarantine during the first days of the semester. 

Fully remote, or WEB, classes will not have a campus or face-to-face class component.  Classes will have synchronous sessions that meet at the scheduled days and times for the class; but all interactions will occur remotely.  Similar to blended classes, students will engage in asynchronous modules or lectures in preparation for the synchronous class meetings.  Fully remote classes will most easily accommodate students who plan to be away from campus for all or most of the semester. 2U classes remain fully remote.

If you would like to investigate the modalities of your fall courses, you can do so via Porches in the following ways:

Current students:

  • On the Flyer Student Services tab 
  • Under “My Resources,” click on “Student Schedule.”  If any of your fall courses are fully remote, the word “WEB” will appear in the class location column.  
  • If you are interested in whether your course is blended or face-to-face, click on “Search and Register for Classes” in order to browse courses.  
  • If you select “Browse Classes,” you will see a column, “Subject Description,” that provides the modality – blended, face-to-face, web – for each class offered. 

Incoming students:

  • On the Front Porch under “Course Registration,” click on “View Your Schedule.” If any of your fall courses are fully remote, the word “WEB” will appear in the class location column.
  • If you are interested in whether your course is either blended or face-to-face, click on the “Browse Classes” link and search for your currently scheduled classes. The “Subject Description” column provides the modality – blended, face-to-face, web – for the class.

Students who wish to take all of their classes remotely should strongly consider blended or remote courses. All blended courses will have online components and, in many cases, faculty will be able to adapt those courses for remote learning. If you have questions about the blended courses – or any course – for which you are scheduled and the opportunity to complete them fully remotely, please contact your dean’s office. Someone will be in touch with you as soon as possible. The contacts for each office are provided below.

Next week, we will be sending a brief survey, asking about your plans for the fall.  Because some students will plan to learn away from campus for the semester, we would like to be able to inform their professors in order to facilitate communication and coordination regarding their classes.  This survey does not replace the need for you to reach out to your dean regarding appropriate courses for remote learning.
