Frequently asked questions about quarantine/isolation

 

Here is new guidance for quarantining for students and employees who are close contacts of someone diagnosed with COVID-19 per updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Students

  • If you have symptoms, quarantine for 14 days. You may also need to quarantine for 14 days if you do not have symptoms but have an underlying health condition.
  • If you do not have symptoms, you must quarantine for 10 days provided you have a negative test on the eighth day. The test is optional, but supports a lower risk of developing COVID-19 while reducing the quarantine time.
  • Students quarantining on campus can be tested on campus via the Student Health Center (call 937-229-3131 to make an appointment). Students also can be tested at Premier After Hours starting Jan. 19. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekends (make an appointment here). Premier After Hours is located at the east end of Marianist Hall in the former Day Air Credit Union site.
  • Students quarantining off campus can be tested by their primary care physician or an urgent care in their areas.
  • In all cases, if you have questions, please consult your contact tracer, primary care physician, or the Student Health Center at 937-229-3131.
  • CDC guidelines call for people who have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 to be quarantined, except for those who have had COVID-19 within the past three months (and have recovered) or who are fully vaccinated as long as they do not show or develop new symptoms. Fully vaccinated means two weeks have elapsed after the second dose of a two-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Employees

  • If you have symptoms, quarantine for 14 days. You may also need to quarantine for 14 days if you do not have symptoms but have an underlying health condition.

  • Critical infrastructure employees who are close contacts can return to work after a seven-day quarantine with a required negative test on the fifth day. Critical infrastructure employees are designated and informed of their status by UD's Office of Human Resources and division heads. 
  • CDC guidelines call for people who have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 to be quarantined, except for those who have had COVID-19 within the past three months (and have recovered) or who are fully vaccinated as long as they do not show or develop new symptoms. Fully vaccinated means two weeks have elapsed after the second dose of a two-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
  • Employees can be tested by their primary care physician or an urgent care in their area.
  • In all cases, if you have questions, please consult your primary care physician regarding symptoms and your contact tracer for isolation/quarantine concerns.

How will the University handle students who become sick during the semester? 

The University has developed protocols and specific living spaces for students who test positive or come into close contact with someone who has tested positive during the school year. We are working closely with our partners at Public Health - Dayton and Montgomery County for planning and implementation.

What resources are available to students in quarantine and isolation housing?

Dining services will deliver meals kits daily. Housing and residence life, and campus ministry will also check on students regularly via phone or Zoom to ensure their needs are being met. Additionally, students in isolation and quarantine will report their temperature and any symptoms daily.

What should I do if I test positive or know that I'm a close contact of someone who tests positive? 

  1. Notify the University on this self-disclosure form. This gets you into the system so that a contact tracer and case manager can reach out to you. 
  2. If you live within 400 miles of campus and are able to go home for your quarantine and isolation, it is strongly encouraged that you vacate campus in the next 24 hours. You do not need to wait for the contact tracer to contact you; you can begin to make plans immediately to return home and they will follow up with you by phone. If you live further than 400 miles from campus, or cannot return home for other reasons, your case manager will arrange for quarantine or isolation housing on campus. 
  3. If you are going to quarantine on campus, pack your belongings. See the subsequent FAQ ‘What do I need to bring to quarantine or isolation?”
  4. Complete the COVID-19 symptoms check-in 24 hours before your anticipated date of return involving your temperature and presence or absence of symptoms. You are required to report your symptoms at this link. Failure to do this could delay your release from isolation.
  5. If you are unable to attend your virtual classes, please contact your faculty. It is your responsibility to contact them individually to discuss any absences (whether virtual or in-person) and missed assignments. If you are employed on campus or hold a leadership role within a student organization, please contact your supervisor or adviser to make them aware of your absence.

What else do I need to know about quarantine or isolation? What if I get sick?

If you need additional medical attention, the UD Student Health Center is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Call 937-229-3131 to schedule an appointment with a physician or nurse. The Health Center also has new partnerships that allow for extended care outside of business hours. During new evening and weekend hours, 5 to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, schedule an appointment online at to see a Premier Health urgent care medical practitioner at the UD Student Health Center. In case of emergency, contact Public Safety at 937-229-2121 immediately for transport to the emergency room and disclose you are currently in isolation or quarantine for COVID.

I've been vaccinated and am a close contact of someone with confirmed COVID-19. Do I need to quarantine?

What do I need to bring to quarantine or isolation?

If you know you are going into quarantine or isolation on campus, you should begin gathering and packing items you will need. Pack essentials like toiletries; clothes; extra bed linens; extra phone charger; prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines; insurance and emergency contact info; contact lens supplies; thermometer; tampons; retainer; etc. Bring books, laptops, chargers, and other education materials. 

Will quarantine and isolation rooms be cleaned between students?

Quarantine and isolation housing will be cleaned and sanitized between one student moving out and another moving in. The common areas and restrooms of the east wing of Marianist Hall, which is the primary area for quarantine housing, will also be cleaned and sanitized multiple times per day. 

How would I quarantine/isolate if I am identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19?

Students who are identified through contact tracing as close contacts of someone diagnosed with COVID-19 are encouraged to return to their permanent residence to quarantine if they live within 400 miles of campus. UD encourages students who can return home to do so to allow the University to prioritize isolation and quarantine space for those who live farther away than 400 miles and those who cannot return home, for example, because a family member is at high risk for COVID-19. What is close contact?

Close contact means:

  • You were within 6 feet of someone who has COVID-19 for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period — starting from two days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, two days prior to specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.
  • You provided care at home to someone who is sick with COVID-19.
  • You had direct physical contact with the person (touched, hugged, or kissed them).
  • You shared eating or drinking utensils.
  • They sneezed, coughed, or somehow got respiratory droplets on you.

How will UD identify close contacts?

The contact tracing process will begin when the Student Health Center is notified of a confirmed COVID-19 case either by public health, a laboratory test or a student or employee's self-disclosure. The University’s team of trained contact tracers will interview those diagnosed with COVID-19 to identify their close contacts on campus. The tracers will then call those close contacts to give them details on the quarantine process, self-care, etc. Housing will contact students regarding a move to their quarantine location. Roommates or housemates of someone who has identified as testing positive would be considered a close contact and should follow the quarantine procedures.

Why is the health department calling me when I've already talked to a contact tracer at UD? 

Students may also receive legally required calls from Public Health Dayton-Montgomery County or the health department for your permanent residence. Students are required to speak with these tracers as well. 

What happens if my test results come back positive while I'm self-quarantining on campus or I develop COVID-19 symptoms while in quarantine?

If your test results come back positive, you must isolate for 10 days or possibly more if you become symptomatic. If you live less than 400 miles from campus, you will be expected to leave campus promptly, even if you live in non-UD housing, and return to your permanent residence for isolation until your health care provider confirms you are no longer contagious. If you fall ill during that time, it is better for you to be at home with the support of your family and the care of your own health care providers. If you live more than 400 miles from campus, you will be moved to designated isolation housing at UD. Students who become symptomatic during the 14-day quarantine will be re-evaluated by a health professional and moved to isolation housing. They should notify the University on this self-disclosure form

Why is isolation 10 days and quarantine for 14 days? 

According to the CDC, people exposed to COVID-19 should quarantine for 14 days from the date of last exposure to a positive individual — the period of time it may take symptoms to appear. Listed above, there may circumstances that allow you to exit quarantine sooner. Quarantine helps prevent the spread of COVID-19 that can occur before someone knows they are sick or that can occur when someone is infected but not experiencing symptoms. Isolation — for people who are sick with COVID-19 or tested positive without experiencing symptoms — is 10 days because people with mild to moderate COVID-19 remain contagious no longer than 10 days after symptom onset. Isolation also should continue until the patient’s fever resolves for at least 24 hours, without the aid of medicine. More information is available online.

What if I’m a close contact of a close contact?

The CDC currently has no recommendations about close contacts of people identified as close contacts of someone diagnosed with COVID-19. For example, if your roommate was identified as a close contact of someone diagnosed with COVID-19 on campus who you have not interacted with. According to the CDC, close contact is any individual who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to positive specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated. However, any student without symptoms can be tested for COVID-19 in the RecPlex. Details are available online.

What do I need to know about completing isolation?

Students who complete their isolation will receive a letter from the UD contact tracing program which they can present to housing and their on-campus employers to confirm they completed isolation. Be sure you properly check the date your isolation ends; you must remain in isolation through midnight on the date your isolation ends. Students who complete isolation do not need to be tested for COVID-19 again before returning to regular housing or work because they can continue to test positive due to low levels of non-infectious virus in their bodies for up to three months. They should be tested if they exhibit symptoms of COVID-19. All students leaving isolation must continue to wear masks, social distance when outside their residence, and follow other safety protocols outlined by the University and Public Health.
