The Path Forward: Messages

2021 Graduation Update

The message below was sent to students updating them on 2021 commencement ceremonies. Companion messages to employees and families follow.

March 25, 2020

Dear students,

We are happy to announce plans for in-person, on-campus graduation ceremonies May 7-9 — designed to allow us to celebrate your achievements with invited guests in the Flyer spirit and tradition, while aligning with Ohio’s pandemic safety guidelines.

The plans, which are being finalized, will allow you to come together with peers from your college or school, along with four of your guests, at UD Arena.

We want to thank all the seniors who provided input to the commencement planning team. We know there is a strong desire for in-person celebration; and while this year’s exercises must be modified to allow for physical distancing and other safety measures to help protect everyone’s health, we hope you look forward to the chance to mark your academic achievements on campus, in person with your friends and family.

Key things to know:

  • The six ceremonies at UD Arena will allow for social distancing to better protect the health of everyone attending.
    • Dates are:
      • Law: Friday, May 7.
      • Master’s/doctoral: Friday, May 7.
      • College of Arts and Sciences (two ceremonies): Saturday, May 8.
      • ROTC Commissioning: Saturday, May 8.
      • School of Education and Health Sciences / School of Engineering: Sunday, May 9.
      • School of Business Administration: Sunday, May 9.
    • Exact times of each ceremony will be announced soon.
  • Guests are invited — limited to four per graduate.
    • Tickets with assigned seating will be required. Guests will be required to follow safety guidelines, including wearing face coverings.
    • Information on the ticketing process will be forthcoming.
    • The ceremonies will be live streamed for friends and family who cannot attend. The link to watch will be shared in advance.
    • A ticket will be required to enter the arena.
  • Baccalaureate Mass will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 8, in the UD Arena. Tickets for limited seating will be required and registration information will be forthcoming.

We are pleased to be able to host the events at UD Arena, our traditional graduation venue, based on the success of UD Athletics, which has refined Arena seating arrangements, ticketing systems and public health considerations through multiple UD and high school athletics events this year. While we would love to be together under one roof at the same time, hosting the smaller ceremonies allows us to offer a weatherproof facility with excellent accessibility, sound and video capabilities, and an experienced team well-versed in working under public health guidelines. No comparable outdoor venues were available to the University.

As has been the case throughout the past year, plans are subject to change based on the state of the pandemic on the campus or in the community at the time of the event.

The University will communicate more details and instructions as they become available. More information will be available on the 2021 graduation website.

In community,

Dear faculty and staff,

We are pleased to announce plans for in-person graduation ceremonies this May — designed to align with safety guidelines while allowing students and their guests to celebrate their academic achievements in the Flyer spirit and tradition.

Details are still being finalized, but please see the email to students below with details on the dates and breakdowns for six ceremonies over three days. Times for each of the ceremonies will be announced later.

Due to public health safety guidelines, we will not be able to include faculty and staff — other than essential members such as marshals and staff supporting ceremony logistics — to attend. We are working on digital means for faculty and staff to congratulate our graduates.

Thank you for all you have done to support our graduating students during an extremely challenging year.

Sincerely,
Paul H. Benson
