The Path Forward: Messages

2020 Graduation Update

The message below was sent to the class of 2020 updating them on commencement ceremonies for their class. A companion message to families follows.

March 25, 2020

Dear class of 2020,

We wrote to you last July about our intention to hold a formal, on-campus commencement for your entire class this May, contingent upon the COVID-19 public health crisis. While recent trends, especially the increasing number of vaccinations, are promising and offer much to be hopeful about, there is still much uncertainty about the virus, its variants and public health requirements.

As we look ahead to what public health requirements may be in May, for your safety and the safety of the entire UD family we must again defer an on-campus ceremony that brings your class under one roof to celebrate your achievements together.

While we are planning four separate undergraduate ceremonies for this year's graduating class, our commitment to you was for a single celebration for your full class. Given the expected public health restrictions and logistical considerations, we cannot plan a full-group experience for this spring.

We will continue to plan and pray for the day the current health crisis has passed, and UD can again host large-scale gatherings. This will allow us to come together again — along with your classmates — to celebrate your graduation in true UD style.

If you booked a hotel room, please remember to cancel your reservation. Hotels holding blocks of rooms are the Marriott at the University of Dayton, Courtyard Dayton, Crowne Plaza, and Fairfield by Marriott (downtown Dayton). Most have a standard cancellation policy of 2-3 days notice but would appreciate early cancellations. The Marriott at the University of Dayton has extended their deadline to March 31.

In the meantime, there are a variety of ways to go, give and lead, and stay connected with your friends and classmates. Consider getting involved as a volunteer through your local alumni community or Flyer Connection, UD’s online networking and mentoring platform that allows you to provide in-the-moment advice to students and fellow alumni while building your own professional network, and check out UDigital for Uniquely UD events and professional development opportunities. The Alumni Relations team will continue to communicate with you at this same email address. If you wish to update your contact information, click here.

We know this is a disappointment for you and for your families, as it is a disappointment for us and our faculty and staff. We truly wish it could be different.

We hope you are safe, healthy and well. We look forward to seeing you again when conditions permit to gather all together once more as Flyers and celebrate your UD degrees.
