The Path Forward: Messages

UD Path Forward: Message to Students

Dear students,

Now that we are through the spring semester, I know you and your families have many questions about what the University is doing to work toward returning to campus safely in the fall. Given all the unknowns about the pandemic, including how long this crisis will last, no university can state with any degree of certainty what conditions for face-to-face, on-campus interaction will be by the time classes start.

Nonetheless, safely returning to campus in the fall is our highest priority. Our Flyer family is at our best when we are in community together. If we make a mutual commitment to each other, work collaboratively with public health officials, remain flexible in our approach to learning and living on campus, and grant each other grace — I believe we can safely and successfully come together on the UD campus this fall.

We have established a new webpage UD Path Forward” that will focus solely on the return to campus, where you will be able to find video conversations, FAQs, a message archive, and other information.

I also invite you to view my new video conversation with recently elected SGA President Natalie Coppolino and Vice President Anne Philbin, in which we discuss student questions like what physical distancing might look like in the residence halls and student neighborhoods, graduation paths, the impact on student clubs and organizations, and whether students would be able to use facilities such as the RecPlex.

A crucial component of our planning is our Catholic, Marianist commitment to community. The health and safety of all students, faculty, and staff —as well as our ability to remain here on campus — depend upon our mutual commitment to each other and our dedication to keeping each other as healthy as possible. This calls for true interdependence as we adapt to new expectations, whether in the classroom, in residence halls, or in the student neighborhood.

As we move into this new phase, let me close by assuring you that everything we are doing is geared to returning to campus so that you may continue to learn and live together in your UD community. I look forward to the day when our community can come together as one.

Grace and blessings,

Eric F. Spina
