Transition for Students with Disabilities

Transitioning from high school to college can be an overwhelming experience. If you are a student with a disability, there are a few things you can do to help ease that transition. Overall, it is important for you to be to be aware of your rights and responsibilities as well as the differences between the K-12 and college environments. The information below is for current high school students starting their journey toward college. If you are an incoming freshman, learn about disability accommodations and the request process here

  • College Admission Test - Work with your high school guidance counselor to review the guidelines for requesting accommodations on standardized tests such as the ACT and SAT. 
  • College Application Personal Statement - Having a disability is not a consideration for admission to the University of Dayton, but if you feel your high school performance was adversely affected by disability circumstances, you may want to provide additional information in your personal statement regarding the impact of your disability.
  • Contact the Disability Services Office - While exploring colleges, visit their Disability Services office. If you are taking a tour of UD, contact the Office of Learning Resources in advance to schedule an informational appointment to occur while you are on campus - we would be glad to meet with you!
  • Learn What to Expect in College - The accommodations and processes at the University of Dayton may be different from what you experienced in high school due to the differences between secondary and post-secondary disability rights statues. Accommodations are determined by trained Disability Services staff based on the supporting documentation you provide, best practices, and your disability status. You will interact directly with Disability Services staff to request and manage your accommodations.
