Chaudhry, who has a J.D. plus a Ph.D. in history, specializes in the relationship between law and economic development. Through his scholarship, he seeks to understand how legal institutions have played roles in economic change in the global south, especially in parts of Asia that were colonial or semi-colonial dependencies. His more specific teaching and writing interests in contemporary legal affairs involve private law (property, contract) and the role of market power in creating inequality, environmental justice and land/natural resource use, and intellectual property and the innovation system. His more specific teaching and writing interests in history and allied social science fields involve the history of legal, political and economic modernity in South Asia and connected parts of the Islamic world, the history of capitalism, and the history of ideas/science.
