Human Rights Center director of advocacy to receive champion for human rights and social justice award

The University of Toledo's Human Trafficking and Social Justice Institute will give University of Dayton Human Rights Center Director of Advocacy Tony Talbott its Champion for Human Rights and Social Justice Award at the institute's 17th Annual International Human Trafficking and Social Justice Conference virtually on Sept. 24.

"We commend Tony for his commitment to advocating for the needs of the vulnerable in our society," said Celia Williamson, executive director of the institute. "Tony is an influential social justice leader in our community. Many anti-trafficking advocates across the U.S. and around the world have learned from Tony. We are lucky to have such a knowledgeable and compassionate leader in our state."

In his role at the UD Human Rights Center, Talbott also directs Abolition Ohio, an anti-human trafficking coalition in the Miami Valley. Among many initiatives, Talbott helped lead the School Trafficking Outreach Program (STOP) in local schools to help students identify and avoid signs of human trafficking. He also was part of a UD group that helped lobby on behalf of an Ohio bill to make human trafficking a felony and researched and wrote a report on online commercial sex activity in the greater Dayton, Ohio, region.

In addition to his work in the UD Human Rights Center and Abolition Ohio, Talbott is a credentialed Not For Sale Campaign citizen investigator of human trafficking and he serves on the Ohio Attorney General’s Human Trafficking Commission.

For interviews, contact Shawn Robinson, associate director of news and communications, at srobinson1@udayton.edu. Talbott is available via Zoom today, tomorrow and Friday for interviews.
